Dan Moxley has announced his intention to run against Senator Emmett Hanger to represent Virginia’s 24th Senate district.[read_more] At his campaign kickoff yesterday Moxley said,
“I entered the political sphere to help regain our freedoms. In fact, because of being a father and business owner, words like truth, freedom and liberty began to take on a greater meaning,” Moxley said. “This campaign is about making sure that the founders’ vision survives. This is a campaign for liberty.”
Moxley continued, “I believe that America is an exceptional nation, and I believe that Virginians are exceptional people. As I travel throughout the 24th District and around the state, I meet exceptional people everywhere. What they want, and what they need, is a chance – a chance for liberty.”
Dan Moxley is a conservative Republican, long time supporter of the Second Amendment and traditional marriage. Moxley has degrees in electrical engineering and theology. He founded Moxley Electronics before moving to Virginia in 2008. He has served as Republican Chairman in Bath and Augusta Counties. He is married to Jan Moxley and the couple have seven children.
More on Moxley’s run here and here.
Marshall Pattie is also running against Emmett Hanger for the Republican nomination.

Mr. Freetas, you think you are going to beat Ed Scott? We’ve got his back here in Madison County. He’s my wife’s second cousin, and you got no business comin down here with the likes of Eric Cantor. Word on the street is that you are in cahoots with Emmet Hanger AND Hilary Clinton.
Lol ok Cole…
BTW, your “cousin in law” Ed Scott endorsed Eric Cantor. Nick Freitas voted for Dave Brat.
Carolyn Bragg is a Democrat and is for amnesty, abortion, anti property rights, votes against the 2nd Amendment and supports Hillary Clinton. Bragg and Marshll “Socialist” Pattie I believe are still members of the Democrat party but do so secretly.
Just talk to the local Delegates Landes and Bell. They know the truth about Carolyn Bragg being an independent socialist. The seems to be very similar to the situation in Campbell County where Democrats took over the party.
The Pattie-activists like Alvis-Long, and Trower have sold out to the Jeb Bush/Marshall Pattie/ Carolyn Bragg establishment.
The real issue here is that Pattie’s supporters (Cole Trower, the Longs, et al) sucked up to Chairman Moxley until they realized he wanted to run for Senate. Then they stabbed him in the back and turned nuclear on him. They’ve been running an extremely negative campaign ever since.
Regarding Carolyn Bragg, she only recently became a Republican. At the time she ran for office, she was listed on the State Board of Elections as an Independent, not a Republican. That was one of the many problems with Carolyn that caused so much confusion over her candidacy, which is why she was initially disqualified. You really should talk to Dickie Bell, Steve Landes, and other legislators about what happened.
Also look at Carolyn’s voting record. She has voted to dramatically increases taxes/spending and she has taken the Democratic position on amnesty, the environment, and other issues.

This article is opening an old wound that many in Draft wish would go away. I am not very political so some of the writers on this message will try to destroy what I say. By reading what Ramona is upset about there are a lot of folks who are not normally interested in politics that will come out to make sure things are done right and to make sure Dan Moxley does not try to use politics to divide our community. I expect there will be more that have something to add from our area.
Jean Shrewsbury said the attempt to deny Bragg’s candidacy amounted to circumventing the mass meeting was wrong. We have men who have died for the right to vote and Mr. Moxley wanted to take it away from Carolyn with out a vote. That reminds me of the old soviet union. -Ramona Thursday night 6:30 pm.
This sounds like the kind of hyperbole that confuses a difficult situation rather than adding clarity to it.
Mr. Fretas I assume you are not from this area like Mr. Moxley and do not know what happened to a good women who the community fully supports. Carolyn was head of the PTA and runs the local 7-11 in Draft. With Dave passing she has done a GREAT job representing South River. No one deserves to be treated like Carolyn Bragg was. -Ramona, Thursday evening 8 pm.
You *still* haven’t explained what the problem is here.
She sells Slurpees. She’s cool in my book.
Ms. Bishop, whether or not Mr. Freitas is from the area or not is a moot point. My understanding, which has never been denied by any of Ms. Bragg’s supporters, is that she insisted on allowing known Democrats to participate in the candidate selection of the Republican Party for the position of Board of Supervisors.
I certainly have nothing against Ms. Bragg and certainly do not desire to bring any reproach upon her character, but if the reports I have heard are in fact true, then she was in violation of the Republican State Party Plan with respect to our internal nomination process.
Such an action could disqualify her as a candidate for the Republican nomination by a nominating committee. Such a decision would not constitute “poor treatment” simply adherence to the rules of a private organization.
Your instance on categorizing anyone who doesn’t share your outrage over this incident as being “unfamiliar with the area” or somehow “unconcerned with what men have fought and died” is completely over the top, especially to someone like me who has actually fought for our constitution, to include rights to FREEDOM OF ASSOCIATION which allows organizations to select their own nomination process free from the interference from people who not only don’t share our values but actively fight against them.
I would suggest madam that before you go around wearing the service and sacrifice of others on your sleeve you show a little more respect for the principles you claim to represent.
it seems likely that “Ramona” and “Jim” are both actually Cole Trower
Look at all of my friends that this man disrespected. He is not even from Stuarts Draft! Thank you for writing this article as I felt the call to let folks know about what happened in our county. People need to know what happened to a good woman. Thank you Mr. Stuart for telling my family about Mr. Moxley selling more snake oils. We sir are not buying. -Ramona Thursday night 6:30 pm.

I’m interested to know where you get the idea that the Pattie campaign has been negative toward Dan Moxley? Any time that Marshall or a representative of his campaign speaks to someone, the focus is consistently on Marshall’s own ideas and his qualifications rather than personal attacks against Mr. Moxley.
BOB STUART [email protected]
VERONA — Emotions ran high for nearly three hours Tuesday night among Augusta County Republicans over the recent controversy involving the candidacy of South River District Supervisor Carolyn Bragg.
“The people of Augusta County will not be bullied by Moxley.”
Please read what he did to Carolyn.
this is only tangentially relevant to this post but we as Republicans need to discuss this sometime. soon. This gentleman, Mr. Moxley, believes is trad’l marriage. does this mean a marriage between a man & a woman?
ok. here is my issue. gay marriage is legal in Virginia. that ship has sailed. so has the abortion ship. Supposing Mr Moxley said he believed in the Confederate States of America? well, that issue is dead, too. Wonder if the Pamunkey Indians wanted their whole nation back? history has passed them by.
even if we sympathize with anti-gay rhethoric or pro-life movement; even if we believe that the CSA should have won the Civil War or that the Indian nations were taken illegally, these issues are over.
I wonder how those who comment here see our party moving forward on the gay marriage issue. (note to moderators–didn’t mean to steal the thread. maybe we should have a thread on this topic soon).
The “abortion ship” has “sailed”? That’s definitely not what the polling says. Sure you could make the strategic argument that gay marriage is a done issue, but abortion has been an issue since the 1970s and will continue to be one well into the future. Many millennials support gay marriage and are also pro-life.
i base that comment on Supreme Court rulings legalizing abortion. with limits
The Supreme Court also once ruled that Slavery was legal across the entire country. Court rulings change, and public opinion does too. The pro-life campaign is winning the argument slowly but surely.
but could you get the Supreme Court to segregate the schools by any legal fiat? Stare Decisis.
If the Republican’s accept the gay doctrine, and abortion is settled by SCOTUS, and they spend like the Bush 43′ and McDonnell admins did, then would somebody tell me the difference between Democrats and Republicans?
we must be fiscal conservatives. the social issues have been settled by the courts
So if the “court settles something” we should just pack up and go home…said no founding father ever.
I sure hope the courts don’t “settle” any of those fiscally conservative issues we are concerned about as well…oh wait.
Tom Jefferson stomped his feet over Marbury v. Madison, but ultimately did absolutely nothing about the principle of judicial review.
Er… WORKING with congress to Eliminate 18 of 35 Judgeships is doing nothing? The principle of Judicial Review is sound. The behavior of crossing the separation of powers needs to result in discipline.
The abortion ship will never sail until legalized abortion ends. You don’t give up fighting to protect the innocent from being slaughtered. Abortion is the scourge of our society. There was a time when slavery was the scourge and there was not end in sight and yet we prevailed in that fight. Just because 5 of 9 people on the Supreme Court get it wrong doesn’t mean we should stop fighting for what’s right. If the Supreme Court decided it was okay to kill children as long as they’re under 5 years old, would you give up then and say “oh well that ship has sailed”?
Standing up for what is right is not wrong. And in fact, sitting idly by and giving up because we “lost” in the Supreme Court is WRONG. Until our government stops condoning infanticide, the fight will not end.
Go get em Moxley.
is there a case in the current judicial pipeline that will ask the correct question to rule against (overturn) Roe? & will that case be granted cert?
but you answered my question. The Republican Party (of Virginia) wants to fight about abortion & continue gay bashing. If these arguments are winning, the general electorate is unaware.
Hip hip hooray! May the best Conservative win!
I don’t know how you beat an incumbent in a 3-way primary. Those numbers don’t add up easily.
Welcome back!
You beat him with a convention. The 24th District just voted to hold one tonight.
So this will officially be decided by convention? Does this mean there will be various mass meetings across the different counties where delegates will be elected to said convention and duke it out there? Let me know any more info you have or if you can point to something online about what happened last night.
I can’t really give you many specifics since I wasn’t there last night in person, but I do know that the 24th District does plan on moving forward with a convention rather than a primary. There’s apparently a piece on this website that’s being written on the incumbent protection act. Look for it in the coming days.
That may be true, but I don’t see why that should stop us from trying to elect a reliable conservative.
What happened to Carolyn was wrong. Carolyn has done her job well since Dave passing and people know her and trust her. She is a Christian and believes in GOD’S WORD. What Mr. Moxley did to Carolyn was just terrible. Carolyn is a strong woman and blessed by God. A thousand will fall at your side but evil shall not come near you. Mr. Moxley should read Psalm. -Ramona, Thursday evening 8 pm.
What in the world are you ranting about??? Go back and re-read what you just posted…it makes literally no sense at all. I’m struggling to even partially comprehend what you’re trying to say/do.
Well, at least this one didn’t turn into a Pattie campaign ad like the last article you wrote about this race.
