The other night, a couple of conservatives fought back against the constant vitriolic attacks on President Trump. The attacks unsettled folks on the left, but were encouraging to those on the right who have been bullied for quite some time now with words like “deplorable and racist” as well as with violent assaults.
First, let’s look at what fighting back looked like the other night. In New York City a production of Shakespeare’s play “Julius Caesar” featured a bloody and gruesome lethal attack on a President Trump look alike. Near the end of the play something truly extraordinary happened. A young woman mounted the stage and started screaming, “Stop liberal violence” over and over. In the back of the audience, a man started screaming, “Goebbels would be proud! You’re a NAZI crowd!” The stunned audience booed these conservative protestors and wildly applauded the execution of the Trump lookalike. To me this is a watershed event, and a substantive warning to the left.
Not unexpectedly, the left has pointed to violence on the right but, as usual, has misstated and distorted the situation. For example, the actors and actresses in the Julius Caesar play were fomenting violence against a sitting president while the conservative protestors were actually condemning the violence the “modernized” play espoused. It is worth noting that the controversy over the play followed Kathy Griffin’s use of a severed head of President Trump. With all of this incitement and a constant stream of highly personal political vitriol, the left got what it wanted via a deadly attack on a group of Republican leaders who simply wanted to play some American baseball.
The American Renaissance website has documented and mapped nationwide attacks on Trumps supporters. As of 31 May 2017, there have been nearly 200 said attacks involving homicides, assaults, property damage and other types of criminal behavior. The Anti-Trump hate map is quite extensive and is supported by specific incidents that can be downloaded in a spreadsheet file. It lays waste to claims made by biased journalists that the violence comes from the right.
The recent conservative protest in NY City can be both condemned and praised. The perpetrators can be condemned for acting uncivilly but they can be praised for refusing to accept the outrageous intolerance of the left. Obama once said “If they bring a knife to the fight, we bring a gun”. So far the right hasn’t brought a knife, and that is fortunate. But the intolerant left can only abuse people for so long.
