TheBullElephant.com was the subject of a malicious hack at some point in the last couple of weeks. We cannot discuss technical details without divulging the direction of our investigation, but the hack visibly manifested itself yesterday evening, June 17.
The damage it caused could only be undone by a server-side restoration of a backup. While the hack itself was not completely debilitating, our hosting company’s effort to undertake a simple backup restoration was. In other words, our site was down today as a direct result of a botched restoration by our hosting company last night.
This botched restoration resulted in the permanent loss of some content, and many reader comments. We apologize for the inconvenience. We have taken measures that we are confident will prevent any repeat of this episode.
