I don’t know how many of our readers are still part of the #NeverTrump folks but I came across this article by Dennis Prager that tells us why we conservatives need to abandon any “moral purity” and vote for Trump. Prager titled the article “Nine reasons why beating Hillary Clinton trumps ideological purity”:
1. Prevent a left-wing Supreme Court.
2. Increase the defense budget.
3. Repeal, or at least modify, Dodd-Frank.
4. Prevent Washington, D.C., from becoming a state and giving the Democrats another two permanent senators.
5. Repeal Obamacare.
6. Curtail illegal immigration, a goal that has nothing necessarily to do with xenophobia or nativism (just see Western Europe).
7. Reduce job-killing regulations on large and small businesses.
8. Lower the corporate-income tax and bring back hundreds of billions of offshore dollars to the United States.
9. Continue fracking, which the Left, in its science-rejecting hysteria, opposes.
These are good reasons to justify a vote for Trump. He had me at number one.

I only need two reasons to vote Trump: A) To prevent a left wing Supreme Court, B) He’s not Hillary…..oh and maybe a third: To piss off both the GOP and Dem elites!
:
I like the third best.
Canvas for Curly.
He’s the only REAL Republican in America today!
He’s got the guts to ‘manage’ the rules no one else would dare touch.
He’s not afraid to speak his mind. Just ask him.
He’s not a stooge like Trump, even if his name is Curly.
He’s not a sleaze like Cruz. His words are as straight as I-94 is across N. Dakota.
He’s not a backstabber like Romney. He looks you in the eye as he twists the blade.
He’s probably taller than Rubio. Everyone else is.
He wouldn’t accept a ‘cede half the state to Democrats’ Cooch’s Compact. Curly thinks Advance! is a political maneuver, not a Homestead GOP retreat.
In short, Curly is our only hope.
Face it, no one else even wants the job. Except maybe Trump.
Tell your delegates to vote for Curly Haglund for Commander in Chief, or maybe the next leader of the RNC.
Whatever.
I have no response for that.
For once, it’s nice to have a candidate who generates lots of enthusiasm. Losing the popular ballot 5-times since 1992 should have taught the RNC something. Trump isn’t your average Republican. That’s a good thing. The Republicans haven’t fought the Obama agenda worth a damn.

So a DEM president is better than Trump? This logic is where universal suffrage starts to suffer
so, Trump is better than a Dem just because he happens to be aligned currently with the GOP, This logic is where universal suffrage starts to suffer
Yes, and this is Party 101. Grown up politics, don’t worry about it.
Typical Trump. No answer. Insult instead.
SD is a Stalking Democrat, and sometimes unfortunately I end up feeding the trolls. I tend to think of TBE as a Conservative Republican Blog, mostly because of the content and the name, mascot, curation, etc. So my incisive commentary is directed that way — You independents may bask in the glow of my wisdom, but please remember your place. The GOP is a political party with an objective, and either you’re with us, or your against us. And this time around, the Donald is with us and we are with him.
I’ve always been with you before, but I’ll be against you this time if Trump is the nominee.
Trumps the Nominee, we’re good.
And that’s OK, Trump brings more to the table than those that slink over to the democrats.
AND I have hope that a more reasoned judgment will allow you to campaign for Trump more than I campaigned for Romney. (and THAT’S raising the bar!)
Don’t think you have to worry about many republicans defecting to the dems. The defectors will be almost entirely conservatives and libertarians, who won’t be comfortable with the dems. They’ll go third party or stay home.
And no one will notice. Real conservatives will back the party nominee, fantasyworld conservatives will remain puzzled by the Constitution, and libertarians will dwell upon 3D-printed bongs being more legal than the Fed.
The fringe can only be spoilers in close elections, fortunately this blowout is going to be ‘Yuge!’
Why would “real conservatives” back a non-conservative with no commitment to the Constitution? Lots of moving parts to this election. Very unpredictable.
Because being conservative is the conservative position.
Trump is the most conservative, most electable nominee the party could muster.
He is the nominee-apparent and the standard bearer of the GOP.
Republicans and most non-Republicans will support him and the ticket in November.
If YOU and a few other non-Republicans want to play Russian Roulette with the future of the country, go waste your vote that way.
There is no great shame in backing the wrong guy, as long as you do it in insignificant numbers.
Too bad your objective is not making America great again instead of simply winning some game
You musta missed the trademarked slogan of The Donald. Politics is a grand and noble game, with the ultimate of real world consequences. Trump and the more conservative GOP will win in November, correct the errors of the past 8 years at least, and increase liberty, you non-Republicans may profit from our example — Play on!
Increase Liberty by overspending, tramping individualaity, tagging all non-white looking people as evil, and funneling more money to the rich? Trump wins and we have less freedom, higher taxes, more war, more poverty, and …
Cool story Bro. We’ve got our nominee, we’re good. Really sorry about your political safe space. Get ready for the Trump World Order.
You want to use logic to persuade me that Clinton is not qualified for the office? That should be easy. Now, you want to use logic to persuade me that Trump IS qualified? I’m all ears.
*The original article’s author asserted that Stalin was less bad then Hitler. That may or may not be true (good thing we can’t ask the 20 million people he killed). But to me, a Stalin is no more acceptable than a Hitler, and a Trump is no more acceptable than a Clinton.
*The original article gave 9 invalid, untrue reasons to vote for Trump.
Universal suffrage starts to suffer when we are asked to ignore the truth about our candidate.
Aside from the invoking Hitler nonsense debate surrender, the clear incongruency is that a dem president is more advantageous to conservative Republicans than a Trump president.
And the Hitler, Clinton, Trump, Stalin rhetoric drmonstrates historical ignorance as well as political naïveté.
Unfortunately, nothing can be done about eliminating Ill-informed voters (aside from how I’m trying to help here) but the party can endeavor to use this type of movement as a high colonic.
You may have a democrat nominee, I will have a Republican President.
I’d be all in favor or eliminating ill-informed voters. Then we wouldn’t have to worry about Hillary or Trump.
For the record, and as a matter of principle, the only acceptable method of eliminating ill-informed voters is to educate them.
Neither is any good. I should pick the best of the worst? What logic is there in that?
Neither is equal, one is worse. One party can do more damage to your liberty than the other. Only an argument devoid of logic advocates the democrats being in the best interests of the conservative.
But hey, I’ll assume you’re a registered voter with a picture ID that can motivate your way to a polling place on the right day in November — do whatever floats your boat. The Donald, the more conservative GOP, and the general electorate will have this one covered either way! Our name is Legion.
Trump hasn’t cast one vote in the halls of Congress or one Executive order that has caused any of the mess we’re in as a nation. NR helped undo the gains Reagan made, by letting 41 & 43 and the rest grow our government massively. Those inside the beltway types are all text and no application in their practices. They don’t grasp the real world.
No, 804hokie, Trump hasn’t cast one vote or made one executive order. He’s simply provided generous funding to everyone who make lousy votes and irresponsible executive orders, What “real world” is it that you cavort with the mafia, buy off politicians and game the system every which way but loose and call that ok? I grasp that there are no shortage of people who do that, I simply won’t go along and agree that it’s ok.
Haha, do you get all your news from that credible oracle, the bi-polar Beck? Because he’s funded all sorts of politicians (including Ted Cruz), he can pragmatically advance an agenda and do some real good. No one is saying the guy doesn’t have his failings. Not even George Washington was perfect. But his positives far outweigh his negatives, and that’s the determination millions have already made. Many more will be doing that in November when he’s elected President of the United States of America.
No, I never followed Beck. I don’t believe Trump’s positives outweigh his negatives. If millions decide to stampede over a cliff tomorrow, I won’t be following them either.
Not a cliff, the ballot box, but you will be fortunate enough to live in a President Trump world because of their actions.
Trump purports to be a big government Republican.
And you purport to be a Republican — that’s what’s wrong in this world, everybody going around purporting in public!
In “Nine Reasons why beating Hillary Clinton trumps ideological purity,” Dennis Prager urges the reader to abandon “moral purity” and vote for Donald Trump. Prager suggests that anybody who won’t vote for Trump is prudish and unrealistic. Citing America’s support of Stalin over Hitler, he suggests we should vote for Trump because he is less wrong than Hillary Clinton.
I say I am worth no more than I demand from others. If I accept lies, I deserve the disrespect that goes with lies. My father may have supported lending arms to the Soviets so they could defeat Hitler, but he would never have voted for Stalin. Neither will I.
I have minimum expectations for my elected officials, and Trump (like Clinton) fails almost all of them. But here, I want to explain why Prager’s nine reasons are nine obfuscations of the truth:
1. Prevent a left-wing Supreme Court. This reason isn’t much of a reason, given that Trump’s positions on issues meander conveniently from the right to the left, depending on the audience at hand. Given that he has walked back any statement that has generated controversy, why would we expect him to stand fast on any position, including the nomination of a conservative justice?
2. Increase the defense budget. In reality, the Obama administration is spending more on defense than ever before. How much? the highest ever — 15% higher than his predecessor! Given that, I have to ask whether we need to spend more or buy less expensive weapons.
3. Repeal, or at least modify, Dodd-Frank. Repeal – are you kidding me? You and I own houses worth considerably less because investment banks played fast and loose with mortgages until the market imploded during the last decade. Dodd-Frank was an attempt to keep that from happening again, and now somebody is trying to convince you to let the investors off the leash? And let’s say that I haven’t convinced you and you still want Dodd-Frank rolled back. What do you think the chances are of Trump the $500M debtor doing that while his creditors phone the Oval Office?
4. Prevent Washington D.C., from becoming a state and giving the Democrats another two permanent senators. Really? Where did this come from? The DC statehood issue is a time-honored football that serves Congress best just as it is – a great distraction from what matters. What about Puerto Rico, or Guam, or American Samoa? What if the Democrats want not two but eight new senators? What if aliens land on the National Mall and want to put the UN in charge? It’s about as likely as DC statehood.
5. Repeal Obamacare. It’s not going to work. Why? The Affordable Care Act is a response to unpaid bills which were a result of the Emergency Medical Treatmant and Active Labor Act of 1986, which forced hospitals to provide free services to those who could not pay.
Faced with a surge in non-paying patients, we responded with an effort to ensure everybody could pay their bills, to keep us from paying them. Let’s get one thing out there immediately: the Affordable Care Act is one ugly baby, and I’m not one to avoid calling other peoples’ babies ugly. However, as much as we don’t want to admit it, it’s our conservative ugly baby, at least in part. The ACA has its roots in the Health Equity and Access Reform Today act, sponsored by Republican Senator John Chaffee and endorsed by his conservative peers, to fight proposals then being advanced by President Clinton’s wife, Hillary. (Can you taste the irony?) Instead of calling out the witch hunters, perhaps we should tell our legislators to amend ACA instead of repealing it.
6. Curtail illegal immigration, a goal that has nothing to do with xenophobia or nativism (just see Western Europe.) Reality check: Illegal immigration to the US peaked nine years ago, and has been on the decline since then. Why? Two compelling reasons: first, DHS has built a wall (yes, it’s already there) across the vast majority of the southwestern border, and covers the rest with a sophisticated array of sensors, aircraft, and Border Patrol Agents. Yes, I know, we hear all about the wide open borders. So if our concern isn’t factual, what is it? It’s about fear of an unknown. Folks, sorry to say it, but that’s xenophobia.
7. Reduce job-killing regulations on large and small businesses. Can we be a little more specific? Last time I looked, conservatives held the majority of seats in both houses of Congress, which would make job killing regulations their responsibility.
8. Lower the corporate-income tax and bring back hundreds of billions of offshore dollars to the United States. This one needs a “Yuge” reality check. Yes, our tax code calls for 35% tax on large corporations. But what do they pay? If you’re United Airlines, General Motors, Hewlett Packard, Xerox, or one of many others, you paid no income tax last year – none. So tell me again why should we lower their income tax?
9. Continue fracking, which the Left, in its science-rejecting hysteria, opposes. Does fracking result in expanded sources of natural gas? Absolutely. Does it come without damage to the environment? Undoubtedly not. Remember coal? It’s now billed as “cheap” and “clean.” Ever seen an abandoned coal mining site? Take a drive through West Virginia, and hang on to your adjectives. Remember, fracking is the new coal mining – a process invented by organizations that want profits and don’t care what is left behind.
I’m a conservative. That means I prefer to maintain as much control, responsibility, and agency over my life as possible. Because of that, I don’t willingly hand over control to others, and I never hand it over to people who peddle lies to me.
You can move the ball up the field of you can move the ball down the field — the other side is playing for keeps.
Maintain your moral neutrality, others will do your heavy lifting in the real world we live in.
Then again, other people have a different view..
Sound like nine good reasons to vote #RomneyMartinez2016
Duh! No such ticket exists, nor will it
“Duh?” Sounds like Trumpese.
If Romney was the nominee, we’d line up again and we’d lose again. I guess some people just prefer whining to winning.
Maybe. I’d rather lose with an honorable candidate than “win” with Trump. #NeverTrump
If you don’t “win” with Trump, then you are facilitating the “win” for the dems. The stakes are too high for a sandy moral ground.
Better the dems than Trump.
I see. I can’t really disagree with your conservative logic.
Some liberals, like Susan Sarandon, have concluded Trump might be better for them than Hillary, and many conservatives have concluded Hillary would be better than Trump: http://thefederalist.com/2016/05/09/clinton-better-for-conservatives-than-trump/
Facilitating a dem president will not increase liberty.
We don’t have the luxury of enduring another ‘lesson’ brandished to the electorate.
Lesser of two evils? Perhaps, but your gamble enabling more fundamental transformists??
Not on my watch!
Hillary would be the lesser of two evils, but, like you, I’m not willing to go there.
You’d rather surrender the American way of life for good. Got it.
Angry, juvenile, jerk does not equal “American.”
since when is politics not a dirty endeavor? politics is war by other means. you’d no doubt say that about the vast majority of the military and veterans; we’re extremely non-pc
It takes 1,237 delegates to win the Republican nomination for president. Trump has reached 1,238. With 303 delegates at stake in five state primaries on June 7, Trump will easily pad his total, avoiding a contested convention in Cleveland in July
You’re probably right. Then again . . . http://www.redstate.com/diary/blbennett/2016/05/04/delegates-may-vote-trump-first-ballot./
What a grand way to destroy the Grand Old Party!
GOP’s already gone through a hostile takeover by a populist, authoritarian demagogue. It’s ablue dog Democrat party now.
I guess you better buckle up your booster seat and enjoy the ride, then. So far, The Donald has been doing an awesome job driving the Trump Train!
Have to admit it would be entertaining if it weren’t so serious. Somebody will make a movie for sure. Buffoonish reality TV star runs for president on a lark and almost wins. Who should play Trump in the movie? I say it’s gotta be Will Ferrell.
Yes, you’ll always have Hollywood, but rumor has it that many of them will be fashionably moving away.
Funny, I can remember people talking about the “buffoonish” B-actor becoming president too. Reagan turned out to be the best president in my lifetime, and all he did was do the things he said he was going to do. Which included bringing down the Iron Curtain and defeating the Soviet Union. If The Donald can do half of what he says he will, I will be completely satisfied.
The Trumpkins who insist on falsely comparing Cheeto Head to Reagan only demonstrate their Dunning Kruger impairment. It’s offensive.
Who would have thunk the establishment RINO types would have been such pathetic losers. Certainly, not me. It is quite entertaining though!
See, this is where being more familiar with the party mechanics could help. Trump is our nominee because he was better than all the others. The general electorate seems to agree. If the party seems blue to you, you might want to talk to some of the folks in the party, we seem to actually becoming more conservative after our populist enema scrapes the elites away.
You obviously don’t understand party mechanics. If Trump gets the nomination, it will be because he wins a majority of votes from delegates at the national convention.
And this reflects the will of the Republican party. I’m not sorry at all that the GOP is getting the best nominee we can manage — not ideal, not perfect, but the best candidate for the job.
This is who, we Republicans, in our collective wisdom (goes to show) have chosen to offer the general electorate.
You may choose to have a tantrum about it, but if you want a different eligible nominee next time, get involved in the party that best reflects your agenda and make it so.
so sad that you accept Trump as the best candidate for the job. He is not even the best of the ones who threw their hat in the ring. How can he be the best GOP’er out there?
Your concern is touching. Go spread your sunshine in your own party. Trump must really freak you guys out — Just wait til he gets in there, it will be even worse for your side than you can imagine. A political Tsunami — heck, he might pick Comstock for Veep just for fun!
My side? This is not a game.
