Protection for me but not for thee–UPDATED

written by Jeanine Martin January 24, 2018

On Thursday Governor Ralph Northam spoke to a multi-faith congregation at St. Paul’s Church in Richmond addressing the need for more restrictions on guns in Virginia.  His desired restrictions include a prohibition of guns in churches.

We do not need these weapons on our streets and in our society,

Currently, the code of Virginia does not allow guns or other weapons in church,

§ 18.2-283. Carrying dangerous weapon to place of religious worship.

If any person carry any gun, pistol, bowie knife, dagger or other dangerous weapon, without good and sufficient reason, to a place of worship while a meeting for religious purposes is being held at such place he shall be guilty of a Class 4misdemeanor.
Delegate Dave LaRock (R-33) has addressed these outdated Blue Laws and their effect on our safety in an op-ed here.  It’s well worth a read to understand how we got to this point in our laws about guns in church.
Meanwhile, over in the Virginia Senate SB 372 repeals that law and would allow guns in church. There is a similar bill in the House of Delegates,  HB 1180.
The Governor opposes these bills, he opposes guns in church for the protection of us but it is fine for him to have such protection. During the Governor’s address today he had armed guards in the church with him.  Once again Democrat hypocrisy is on full display. Protection for me but not for thee.
UPDATE:  The Senate bill to allow guns in church has passed the Senate.  More here. The House bill is also expected to pass.  We need to put pressure on Northam to not veto the bill as he has said he will do.
