VPAP. org has put together a chart showing the rise in political donations from outside Virginia:
VPAP.org defines an outside group as:
a non-Virginia partisan group, labor union or single-interest organization that has given at least $5,000 to a candidate for Governor, Lt. Governor or Attorney General. The definition also includes Virginia groups that serve as a pass-through for money from affiliated national organizations.
In this year’s race for Governor, Republican Ed Gillespie has received 30% of his campaign donations from these outside groups and Democrat Ralph Northam has received 32% of his donations from outsiders. With Virginia’s Governor’s race being the only one in the country this year, (New Jersey’s race is a forgone conclusion) it’s not surprising Virginia’s candidates have received many outside donations.
