Salaries of Virginia State Employees 2016-2017

written by Jeanine Martin October 26, 2017

The top salary paid to a Virginia State employee is just under a million dollars. Ronald D. Schmitz, the Chief Investment Officer for the Virginia Retirement System, makes $957,715.  Virginia public university presidents follow closely behind. See all their salaries here.  On the same page is a searchable database for all Virginia state employees.

We previously covered the salary and perks of Virginia University Presidents here.

Aren’t they the same people preaching about income inequality

    • sd

there are a lot if people working for the state, which “same people” are you talking about?

      • David Dickinson

        The university presidents.

        Democrats are hypocrites.

        • sd

and your evidence of this is what?

          • David Dickinson

Evidence is Mr. Massoud’s point: university presidents decrying income equality, but raking in big 6 figure and sometimes 7 figure salaries.

Same goes for Hollywood types. Crying about social justice as the bounce between their 7 homes on 3 continents.

Or Dems saying they care about the little guy but murdering the children by the millions.

            Or …

          • Rob Blackstone

And not just the salaries, their entire compensation package.

At VA’s top universities, the presidents also get perks such as “Cadillac” health coverage, 2-3 car leases, country club memberships, and travel expenses for their family.

          • Jeanine Martin

Here you go. It’s a bit out of date so I’m sure these figures are higher now. http://thebullelephant.com/salary-and-perks-of-the-presidents-of-virginia-public-universities/

          • sd

show me these presidents decrying income equality?

          • David Dickinson

            inequalty

          • sd

you still are simply making up a scenario where university presidents rant against society where in reality this never happened – unless you can point to your source for this one can only conclude it is another example of GOP-developed, fake new

  • Rob Blackstone

There’s absolutely no task performed by a state gov’t employee that’s worth almost $1 million/year.

And very few that would be worth six figures.

    • sd

So much for the GOP theory that free markets rule. Typical GOP comment condemning successful people and shaming them for earning the going rate

      • Rob Blackstone

Gov’t employee salaries are not based on the free market.

        • sd

wait. what? Are you saying these folks force the gov’t to pay them a certain amount or are you saying they are not earning a competitive salary or are you saying that if they worked in the private sector then their high salary would be OK? What are you saying

  • Jim Portugul

It’s nothing but the fleecing of the taxpayer by both political party’s. Good luck getting the power company based general assembly to do anything about this BS. If you have been following the pay of these people, just look at the massive increases in the 100’s of thousands of dollars that they have received in the last few years.

    Nothing but corruption.

  • DJRippert

Let get fact based. The University of Virginia had total operating and non-operating revenues in the 2015 – 2016 school year of $2.8B. It had 28,000 employees. The #500 company on the Fortune 500 was ABM Enterprises with $5.1B in revenue and 110,000 employees. Let’s not talk about Teresa Sullivan like she’s the equivalent of the CEO of Wal-Mart. If UVA were a private enterprise it would be about #760 on the Fortune list – a slot occupied by Panera Bread. I don’t begrudge her the compensation she makes but let’s not make her the corporate titan she is not.

    • sd

because they can get it – it is called free markets. Same reason coffee costs what it does at Starbucks

      • Goengo

I’m delighted to see you defending the free market…. (even if you do raise that support only in defense of the salaries earned by democrats).

  • Sandy Sanders

Not the University Presidents you need to worry about – I think the year I researched it at the blog 29 persons earned $300k or more at VCU and only two were the basketball coach and president.
