In 2015, Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) drafted the bill that authorized the Iran nuclear deal, and then lied about what was in it to the American people so he and his fellow swampsters in Congress could pretend they opposed it.
H.R. 1191, legislation by Corker gave then-President Barack Obama the authority to lift sanctions against Iran’s nuclear program. The law provided that “any measure of statutory sanctions relief by the United States pursuant to an agreement [with Iran]… may be taken, consistent with existing statutory requirements for such action, if, following the period for review provided… there is not enacted any such joint resolution” by Congress disapproving of the deal.
With that language, which Corker was responsible for, Congress had preapproved the Iran nuclear deal before anyone even had the chance to read it. It set in place a process where Congress could engage in show votes after the fact, knowing they were doomed to failure, so that members could pretend they were opposed to the Iran nuclear deal.
At the time, Corker carried on this farce, pretending to oppose the agreement, with a Washington Post opinion piece titled, “Congress should reject the bad Iran deal,” warning that “rather than end Iran’s nuclear enrichment program, over time this deal industrializes the program of the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism.”
Of course, everyone knew that at the time, that the deal would facilitate the nuclear weapons program, and still H.R. 1191 was adopted, approving the deal and lifted sanctions, thanks to Corker.
Now, Corker is urging President Donald Trump to stay in the agreement. On July 26, Corker told the Washington Post, “You can only tear up the agreement one time. So when you’re going to tear it up, since nothing bad is happening today, and when I say bad, it’s not like a nuclear weapon’s getting ready to be developed, we gave up all our leverage already, so wait until you have your allies in line with you. Radically enforce it.” He said the U.S. could leave the agreement later if there was proof Iran had reneged on the deal.
Which, may be exactly what has happened. Coming back to bite the U.S. in a big way, it is now suspected by the British Foreign Office that Iran may have exported its nuclear arms technology to North Korea, destabilizing the Korean peninsula and risking general war, the Telegraph reports.
Per the report:
The Foreign Office is investigating whether ‘current and former nuclear states’ helped Kim Jong-Un in his drive to mount nuclear warheads on missiles. Senior Whitehall sources told The Sunday Telegraph it is not credible that North Korean scientists alone brought about the technological advances. Iran is top of the list of countries suspected of giving some form of assistance, while Russia is also in the spotlight.”
That would be in violation of the agreement and the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
Of course, the Congressmen and Senators who voted to adopt H.R. 1191, including Corker, have no one but themselves to blame. They authorized the deal that led to sanctions being lifted. With them in still in place, maybe that would not have happened.
Fortunately for the people of Tennessee (and everyone else) Corker is actively considering retiring from the U.S. Senate when his seat comes up again for reelection in 2018. “As far as what am I going to do in the future, I’m still contemplating the future,” Corker told CNN.
Congress had the chance to defeat the Iran nuclear deal and proceed on a different path, when H.R. 1191 came up in the first place. Instead, Congress dropped the sanctions without precondition, which may have helped Iran proliferate nuclear weapons as a result. Was it worth it?
Given the failure of the Iran nuclear deal amid the growing likelihood it facilitated Iran’s export its programs to North Korea, and Corker’s role in lying about Congress’ role in authorizing it to the American people, retirement in the least appears appropriate. Somehow, an apology is really not going to cut it.
Big government has arrived to save Florida. Trump and Pence on separate planes, extolling the virtues of the federal government. Same act as Texas the week before.
One bright spot for conservatives: Nancy Pelosi rolled out of bed and got on CNN singing the praises of the art of the deal.
Just what conservatives were hoping for, eh? Chuck and Nancy aligned with the Trumpster, who is now touring the country with the federal checkbook.
Retire? Resign? Why not censure and/or impeach and indict for treason?
I could only wish the Republicans of Tennessee would also vote to kick this man out of the Republican Party as well before the next election. For with Republicans like this, what difference is there any more between a Republican Party that endorses and supports the agenda of the Democratic-Progressive-Socialist-Communist Party across the aisle?
Are you serious? Is remaining a Republican like playing a game of hearts, where you need to get them all correctly or you shouldn’t have tried at all?
It’s easy to find something, anything upon which to disagree. Lincoln got it right: If any two people think the same way about something, we don’t need one of them.
Instead, here on TBE, all too often there is a hair-trigger reaction against even the slightest disagreement, or even on a single issue or two. Eventually there will be no one remaining.
Indict for treason? Why? Because you disagree about something? Grow up.
The criminalization of political opponents is a very dangerous trend. Arpaio is but one of a number of such instances.
Every year and month that Iran does not become a nuclear weapons state is a good DEAL. Every year and month that Iran in engaged in regionals discussions about a more stable set of political goals is a good DEAL.
If you prefer to send your sons and daughters, grandchildren, cousins and neighbors into perpetual wars in the Middle East, instead, make sure you get them signed up right away.
YOU DIDN’T sign them up yet! GET MOVING. IF YOU WANT perpetual war in the Middle East- for whatever un-Godly reason you devise – send all your children there now.
What makes you think that perpetual war in the middle-east has not been happening. Ever read the Bible or study the history of Islam?
Contributing to perpetual war – or any war – is EXPLICITLY CONTRARY to DIRECT TEACHINGS of Jesus of Nazareth.
That is not true. Jesus recognized that nations exist and have every right and duty to defend their citizens against destruction.
What Jesus ‘recognized’ is NOT the TEXT of the SCRIPTURES! THAT IS YOUR INVENTION of what was ‘in Jesus mind’. Jesus’ DIRECT EXPLICIT teaching include ‘blessed are peacemakers’, ‘forgive seventy times seven’, etc.
i wish that I had voted for Hillary now. With Trump, you have Hillary in a cheap, Chinese suit. At least Hillary’s clothes were not made in China.
Well, if you like traitors, Hillary is your gal.
Speaking of liars. Apparently, it has just been announced that Trump, Pelosi, and Shumer have a deal to let the dreamers stay. What did i tell you people that Trump gave up last week for the debt limit increase? A 90 day extension for 800,000 illegals. And you think that the Iran deal is bad?????
i can’t wait till November to kick Republicans in the ass in the voting booth for this s–t. I cannot wait.
You can bet you sweet ass Ryan and McConnell signed off on this deal.
If we are sealing the border logic would dictate at some immediate point that there would not be a need for DACA.
As I wrote last week, the DACA move was simply escalating an executive order to federal law, and will be signed by Trump.
Someone here who named himself/herself SALT openly claimed I was delusional, that it was a DACA defeat. We didn’t need to wait long on this one to discover reality.
Same “SALT” that claimed market volatility should scare us out of markets entirely — despite an S&P index up over twelve-thousand percent over the past 50 years. Invest in America! The capital is put to good use and we profit — and retire — on the investments made.
1st ,I do not wish to rock Albertsons boat by topic subject matter. I am not in argument with you or Salt.
I only as many others are in support of trump (Yes little t) for an American first policy and I have yet to see that.
I could care less about a BS peace and love holding hands moment with Dems.
I could care less about the stock exchanges, **My retirement is solely based on my S-Corp** and it is a labor S-Corp.
When Bush spoke of Immigration compromise he said; “the House Bill making illegal aliens felons was mean spirted legislation” and that he desired a compromise I penned a letter to the 43rd stating; that my friends and neighbors jobs were not up for compromise with me. I meant it then , I stand by it today!!!!!
The lead Republican trump came down an escalator with much more tenacity, I guess he is having a hormonal change.
I could post here the rapist, the child molester, the drug dealer, the murder that killed my friends son all right here in Va.
As trump said on the trail the problem with elected officials was the day after the election was won that day they started working on reelection.
Well he better get off his fat a$$ and get to work on that America First or the 15.00 an hour minimum wage is going to be stuffed up his big Ole Butt.
America will not stand for “The Art of the Deal” where he only delivers 20% and backs out of his contract with the forgotten men and women of America.
The Workers Compensation Insurance Industry lobbyist better get it together on the lost premiums due to the underground labor market.
So trump is planning on giving out free stuff to Un Americans?
That is how it looks to about 5 guys on the job today. That feeling will multiply.
And don’t get me going on that Jeb¡Gillespie and his DPOR Regulatory cut NO JOBS plan.
For 20 years the American worker has been raped!
My apologies to Albertson for above comments but the blue collar man must speak,
As a small child living outside NAS Oceana I used to come home from school to
watch the news for the images of rockets being fires off of truck like machinery, bodies lying in ditches gassed during the Iran/Iraq war. Yes a long time ago have we ever had our $h!+ together overthere?
Retirement is a minimum…would prefer resignation.
Why not follow up this article and explain that the other major players in the Iran sanctions deal were pulling out? Due to those key countries pulling out of the sanctions, I still believe Obama got all we were going to get.
What about the $300 million dollar agriculture technolgy deal that Israel just signed with Communist China? Any money going to Communist China just supports Kim Junk Zuno and helps N. Korea not to get the bomb, but build a much, much, bigger bomb, and bigger missiles to put their bomb in my back yard.
Just like N. Korea, Iran will eventually have a big bomb if they don’t already have one. The biggest problem is not N. Korea or Iran, but the Communist China that Wall St. created to satisfy their own greed. N. Korea would not have the bomb or even exist with Communist China.
Name any member of government in Washington who is not a liar, and who should not resign.
I could support amnesty and citizenship for the 800,000 DACA’s with a compromise agreement.
1) In return for amnesty and citizenship for 800000 DACA’s, no new legal immigrants would be allowed into the USA for 2 years, no exceptions.
2) During this 2 year compromise, Congress works out a plan to penalize via massive fines any employers who hire illegals. The fines would be used to pay citizens a reward to report to ICE any employers who have illegals on their payroll, and deportation costs.
That is called compromise. But, Israeli run Wall St. and Israeli run Hollywood will never, ever, go for any compromises.
And, Congress is not about to do anything that is honest.
Are there any trustworthy politicians? I think we need to go back to the founders. Here is a sometime disputed quote from George Washington “Government is not reason, it is not eloquence — it is force. Like fire it is a dangerous servant and a fearful master; never for a moment should it be left to irresponsible action.” or how about this quote from Donald Trump “I have embraced crying mothers who have lost their children because our politicians put their personal agendas before the national good. I have no patience for injustice, no tolerance for government incompetence, no sympathy for leaders who fail their citizens.”
