BOEHNER IS OUT. In an (undoubtedly tearful) announcement to the House Republican Conference this morning, Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) announced that he will resign both the Speakership and his seat in Congress at the end of next month. Boehner’s stepping aside as the country’s most senior Republican comes as a majority of Republicans indicate they feel betrayed by their party, and after significant chatter indicating a leadership challenge was in the works from House conservatives. Senate Conservatives Fund President Ken Cuccinelli issued this statement in reaction:
“Today’s news is welcomed by conservatives across the country. As Speaker of the House, John Boehner was hostile towards conservatives and our principles. Rather than fighting President Obama and his liberal policies, Speaker Boehner embraced them and betrayed his party’s own voters. The next Speaker of the House must be willing to defend the Constitution and stand up for the principles of freedom that make our nation great.”
Next in line for the post is Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), who many expect to be no different than Boehner. Stay tuned for fireworks.

So KC comment on Washington sounds positively Senatorial
So what has changed? Nothing…
Looks like no government shut down. Now that Boehner is leaving, he won’t worry about angering Conservatives. He will work with Democrats to get a funding bill that includes money for planned parenthood and will pass it over the objections of his own party, then skip off to join a big lobbying firm on K Street.
Sounds exactly right.
Jeb Bush’s Virginia campaign co-chair issued a NYT opinion piece this morning, extolling Boehner’s wise leadership for enabling the bulk of Barack Obama’s agenda. Maybe that’s where Boehner will end up — John and Eric, together again.
¡Jeb! / Boehner 2016 — ‘Why even pretend?’
FYI, McCarthy is from CA, not IL, and Ken misspelled “fighting.”
Both errors are mine. Thanks for pointing them out.
