State Sen. Ben Chafin, (R-Russell) died on January 1st from complications of COVID-19. He was 60 years old and represented the 38th district in the Virginia Senate.
The Governor has announced a special election to fill his seat to be held on March 23rd after the General Assembly session has ended.
Three Republicans have expressed an interest in running for the seat, Jony Baker a Dickenson County sheriff’s deputy, Elijah Leonard a Lebanon Town Council member and Kimberly Lowe who recently ran in southside for a seat in the House of Delegates.
The last date to file to run for the seat is January 22nd.
