Happy to say my little berg in Western Loudoun, Lovettsville, made the list of “10 Virginia Small Towns that Deserve Your Attention”. One quibble, the best restaurant in Lovettsville is Market Table Bistro, well worth a trip. Another Loudoun town, Middleburg, also made the list, proving once again that Loudoun is the best county in Virginia. (Your results may vary.)
This is my all time favorite picture of Middleburg, the Middleburg Hunt during one of the town’s Christmas parades,

Since one of my and my wife’s hobbies is to pick a Virginia town and go there for the weekend, I’ve been to all of those and know they are all great selections. A couple more that I think are worth the time:
— Staunton. Go there to see a play produced by the American Shakespeare Theater, in an environment designed to look like Shakespeare’s Blackfire’s Theater in London. American Frontier Museum is an outstanding way to learn about all the 18th century cultures that made America. The town is very walkable and full of architectural gems. Nightlife in the downtown is good and a walk around downtown Mary Baldwin college is fun.
— Danville and Martinsville are slowly picking themselves up from the loss of a lot of industry (thank you, NAFTA), but each is worth a weekend. We saw one of the funniest community theater productions of “Flaming Idiots” we’ve ever seen in Martinsville. Rania’s restaurant in the old downtown is one of those old gems that was probably first rate when the town had lots more money. Lots of history in Danville, fine architecture from the days it was a tobacco capital and a great walking -biking trail that goes right across the Dan River. Grab a snack at Midtown Market and walk down Millionaires Row. Did you know Lady Astor, one of Churchill’s verbal sparing partners was from Danville? Etc.
And, of course, Floyd, Virginia, especially on a pleasant summer evening.
