The Supreme Court dismisses Virginia Republicans’ challenge to new districts

written by Jeanine Martin June 17, 2019

The Supreme Court said today they will not hear the Republicans in the House of Delegates challenge to the proposed redistricting set by a lower federal court. That means the new redistricting, which heavily favors the Democrats in the House, will take effect this year. Attorney General referred to this as a “big win” for democracy in Virginia.

Justices voting not to hear the case were Ginsberg, Clarence Thomas, Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan and Neil Gorsuch. Quite an interesting mix. Dissenting justices were Chief Justice John Roberts and Justices Samuel Alito, Stephen Breyer and Brett Kavanaugh.

At least 6 Republicans seats in the House of Delegates have been made more difficult to retain in November’s election. Those who may be in jeopardy of losing their seat include Speaker of the House Kirk Cox.

A map of the new districts, along with winners and losers, can be found here.

More on the story here, here, here, and here.
