Hardly a day goes by anymore when once aberrant behavior – citizens actively interfering with the role of law enforcement, the continual use of “F” Donald Trump by members of Congress, late night television hosts and other “celebrities,” and public officials (once held to a higher standing) embracing lawlessness, the lack of civility and outright violence those of differing political views – are but a few examples of once unacceptable behavior that has become the new normal.
Where once we shared a common national ethos and standards of conduct it appears that many literally hate Donald Trump so viscerally that all logic and reason simply eludes them even when faced with irrefutable facts. I often ask those who criticize our Chief Executive specific policies other than his personality, “do you not like? “ The typical response is “it really does not matter because he is a “Nazi” and I just cannot get past that.” I will respond “Oh, I see you do not have a serious objection to the policies that the majority of Americans recently elected him to office to enforce?” Typically there is no response, and I am just given the look that I am idiot and told as the person departs “Oh, you’re one of them.”
Yes, where once we were a nation where it we could discuss differing political views with a modicum of civility and restraint those “influencers” on the left side of the aisle have now taught us through not only their words but more importantly their actions that a visceral hate of Donald J Trump justifies the means at almost any cost. Unfortunately, this appears to be the new “normal” and acceptable behavior. When the British were defeated at Yorktown 250 years ago their band played “The World Turned Upside Down” to indicate how incredulous it was that the most powerful army in the world was defeated by a bunch of ragtag Colonials.
Well indeed the world did turn upside down, righted itself in the formation of the United States of America where freedom of speech and the rule of law applied but sadly it now appears to be returning to its former axis where now anarchy and lawlessness prevail.
