Never Trumper Matt Lewis Said In 2019, On the Eve of Trump’s First Impeachment, that the “Walls Were Closing In” on Trump. Lewis Now Says Tariffs Could Destroy Trump. Hope Springs Eternal.
I remember years ago, during Trump’s first term, probably sometime in 2018, reading an article in the prestigious British newspaper, The Economist, (I know it is a magazine, but they self-identify as a newspaper) talking about porn star Stormy Daniels, and how her case could bring Trump down. In that article I learned that he had a non-disclosure agreement with Daniels. She agreed not to talk about their relationship and in exchange he gave her money. How fortunate for her! By reading that article I also learned that her real first name was Stephanie; her parents didn’t name her “Stormy.” Why would the staid Economist bring this up. Simple, they were on the lookout for something, anything, whether it was a single event or scandal, that could bring Trump down. And the American mainstream media was, and still is, doing the same.
Since 2016 the media has pushed all kinds of fake scandals. After Trump got elected there was the Russian collusion hoax, there was the fake Steele dossier, there was Trump’s Charlottesville “fine people on both sides” comment. The media twisted his words, to convey support for the neo-Nazis who showed up. Actually, he was referring to people on both sides of the statue argument. The whole thing was started because communist held Charlottesville decided to remove historic statues. As communists do, they want to shape peoples view of history and removing statues is very important in achieving that goal. Lenin and Stalin did the same thing. Well, there were competing protests in response, and some neo nazis showed up. Now I personally don’t think people who want to remove historic statues are fine people, but Trump is more tolerant than I am on that. But the media claimed that he was praising neo-Nazis as fine people.
There was Trump’s firing of FBI Director James Comey, the media thought that was a scandal, surely, they thought that it would bring down Trump. Comey was a horrible Director who was rightfully fired, but the media made Comey seem like a victim of dictator Trump. They glamourized him falsely into some sort of Eliot Ness type crime fighter. Comey the honorable G man – what a farce. Then there was the claim that at the border Trump was putting migrants in cages, which were built by Obama. They showed footage, but it was taken when Obama was President.
In 2018, Democrats took over the House of Representatives, and took it up a notch, they came up with a case for impeachment, a real sham. It was reminiscent of a bad movie plot. They had a swamp rat (under the guise of a whistleblower) who leaked information to Democrat Rep Adam Schiff, it was the transcript of a phone call. He claimed that in that call Trump asked, Ukranian President Volydymr “You don’t have the cards” Zelensky, to get dirt on Biden, and from there Trump would have forwarded that to the Attorney General, who would then prosecute Biden. The transcript said no such thing, but the argument was that Trump wanted to get dirt on Biden and then prosecute him to ruin him politically. That would be considered, even if it didn’t actually happen, to be abuse of power, election interference. Ironically it was Biden’s DOJ that prosecuted Trump. And Liberal New York, and Fulton County Georgia prosecutors also went after Trump after he left office. The purpose of these prosecutions was to interfere in the 2024 election.
Now it’s understandable that Democrats are anxious to see Trump stopped or at least slowed politically. His fall is imperative if Democrats are to mount a comeback. In fact, Democrat campaign consultant James Carville even advised Democrats to keep quiet and wait for Trump to fall. For Carville Trump’s fall is inevitable. It’s just a matter of time.
However, there is also a small cadre, very small, (you might even describe them as miniscule), of Never Trump Republicans that are continuing to predict his fall. Why, because for them to be vindicated he has to fall. His supporters must abandon him. Either Republicans were right to stick with Trump or the Never Trumpers were right to leave the Republican Party. If Trump continues to cut taxes, cut regulations, appoints conservative judges and generally keeps his campaign promises, the Never Trump Republicans will be exposed as either fools or closet leftists.
To be clear I am referring to people who once had an affiliation with the Republican Party but who left in 2016 once Trump became the Republican nominee. It may be that all the Never Trump Republicans work in the pundit industry. That is that in real life there is no such species as a Never Trump Republican. And if there were such a species in 2016 and 2020, they are now no longer roaming the streets of the America. They have all gone the way of the dodo bird.
But inside the beltway there are still Never Trump Republicans, they write for left wing rags like the Daily Beast and The Hill Newspaper and appear on the mainstream media. They claim to have left the Party based on principle, namely that Trump was neither a Republican nor a conservative. People such as Mike Murphy, Matt Lewis, Michael Steele, Rick Wilson, David Frum, Bill Kristol. Interestingly David Frum was born in Canada, he became a speechwriter for George W. Bush. Kind of fitting, George W. Bush importing a guy from Canada to write his speeches. Another example of a job Americans didn’t want to do.
These people are useful idiots to the left. The media puts them on TV, they give them a platform. These people are not conservative, they never were, and they would have left the Republican Party at some point; Trump was just the excuse. Today they don’t call themselves Republicans, but many of them, such as Matt Lewis, do claim to be conservatives. Think about that. They had a chance to vote against Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. They couldn’t even do that, but with a straight face they will claim to be conservatives. Everyone even remotely conservative voted for Trump. Lewis for example voted for Biden in the primary in 2020, and Rick Wilson said his fellow conservatives should vote for Joe Biden in 2024.
The media brings them out and they almost always predict Trump’s fall. It’s designed to titillate the MSNBC audience; it’s like catnip to the left. Trump’s fall is just around the corner. These Never Trumpers have a cottage industry. They have carved a little niche out for themselves. The media puts them on to say bad things about Trump, otherwise I highly doubt any of these people would be put on television. A good example, indeed, a perfect example is Matt Lewis, who currently writes for The Hill, years ago he was CNNs in house Republican. He has spent years predicting Trump’s downfall.
In 2019 on the eve of Trump’s first impeachment Lewis claimed that the “walls were slowly closing in on Trump”. Lewis believed that the impeachment (the first one) would end Trump’s presidency and forever stain his legacy, and, maybe most importantly, cause his base to abandon him.
Democrats controlled the House and passed the impeachment without a single Republican vote. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi withheld the articles of impeachment from the Senate in the hopes of getting them to rig the trial for the prosecutors. The Republican Senate wouldn’t agree, but she eventually relented, and handed over the articles, and Trump was quickly acquitted, which Pelosi could have predicted. But Lewis claimed that the “Walls were closing in” on Trump. Was that his honest political assessment, or wishful thinking. My guess is that his honest political assessment and his wishful thinking are one in same. Now in fairness to Lewis he did use the qualifier “slowly”, so maybe that meant it would take about 7 or 8 years for the walls to finally close.
Well today Lewis is still predicting Trump’s fall. On his podcast he interviewed former Meet the Press host Chuck Todd. They seem to think that Trump’s tariffs will bring about a recession and that will bring Trump down. Those two fools also spent time speculating that perhaps Trump’s tariff debacle will hurt him the way the Afghanistan withdrawal undermined Biden’s presidency.
The fall of Trump has yet to arrive. Trump is riding high, and the prophets who predict his downfall are left searching for the next scandal or major failure. I am reminded of a nursery rhyme. Allow me a little modification:
“Trumpty Dumpty sat on a wall.
Trumpty Dumpty had a great fall.
All the king’s horses and all the king’s men
Couldn’t put Trumpty together again.”
Ah, hope springs eternal for the Never Trumpers. His downfall is around the corner. If you look really closely you can already see “The walls are closing in” on Trump.

Never Trumpers such as Liz Cheney, John Bolton, and Nicole Wallace are basically war mongers who aren’t happy unless we’re bombing someone.
Fact is Trump is trying to make this a safer world and the neocons won’t ever support that.
Well written and thoughtful analysis of the RINO-never Trumper’s.
The morons have been underestimating how for years.
