Virginia has its first confirmed case of the Zika virus. A recent traveler to Brazil returned to northwest Virginia with the disease. The disease causes microcephaly, a birth defect where babies are born with unusually small heads and malformed brains. In Brazil there have been 4,000 cases of microcephaly since October 2015. Contrast that with fewer than 150 cases in the country in all of 2014. More on the Virginia case of Zika virus here and here. Information on the Zika virus from the CDC here.
