The vaccine developed by Pfizer Inc. and its German partner BioNTech will be rolled out in the coming days.
At his press conference on Thursday Governor Northam said the first round of vaccinations would be given this weekend to healthcare workers in Virginia. They will be triaged with the first doses given to healthcare workers who have the most contact with ill patients, such as doctors and nurses who work in operating rooms and nursing homes. Also residences of nursing homes will be among the first to receive the vaccine.
In another week Moderna Inc’s vaccine should become available. In early January, Johnson & Johnson expects to know if their vaccine will be available.
In the second round of vaccinations, which could come in January or February, those over 65 years old and those with chronic health conditions will be able to get the vaccine.
