Governor Youngkin amends bill to move up Loudoun School Board elections to this year

written by Jeanine Martin April 12, 2022

Loudoun School Board elections are scheduled for next year, 2023. Governor Youngkin has signed a bill that would move those elections up to this November’s ballot.

On his first day in office, Youngkin signed an executive order authorizing the Virginia Attorney General to investigate Loudoun County Schools for its mishandling of the two sexual assaults that occurred last year at two high schools. After the first sexual assault in a girl’s bathroom, Loudoun Schools transferred the perpetrator to another high school where he assaulted a second girl in a bathroom.

Governor Youngkin’s amendment to HB1138:

Notwithstanding any other provision of law to the contrary, elections for all nine districts of the Loudoun County School Board shall be held on November 5, 2022. Thereafter, the lot drawing conducted pursuant to 22.1-57.3:1.1 of the Code of Virginia by the Loudoun County Electoral Board to determine the members of four of nine districts who will be elected to the Loudoun County School Board for four-year terms and the members of the remaining five districts who will be elected to the Loudoun County School Board for two-year terms to ensure the staggering of member terms for such school board shall be conducted at the electoral board’s first meeting of 2023 but no later than January 31, 2023.

Loudoun County parent advocates have launched numerous petition drives to replace school board members. More on that story here.

Although the Governor signed the amendment to move Loudoun County School Board’s election to this year, it will not become law unless the General Assembly approves the changes when they meet again on April 27th.

More on this story here and here.
