There has been a decrease in the number of deer, bears, and turkeys harvested in Virginia during the 2022-2023 hunting seasons. The numbers are:
- Deer 184,968, down 3% from the year prior
- Bear 2,232, down 25% from the year prior
- Turkey 1,621, down less than 1% from the year prior
It is thought the numbers have decreased because of a bumper crop of acorns making it so the animals don’t have to travel far for food making it less likely they will come in contact with hunters.
