Cardinal news has an excellent summary of ten takeaways on yesterday’s primaries in Virginia. After scouring the internet, their summary, by Dwayne Yancey, is the best.
Trump had a good night in Virginia. From Cardinal News:
“Given the closeness of the McGuire-Good race, it seems fair to say that without Trump’s endorsement — and it was both an enthusiastic endorsement of McGuire and a pretty vicious tear-down of Good — that McGuire would not have won.
Likewise, Trump’s preferred candidate for the U.S. Senate nomination — retired military officer Hung Cao — rolled to a landslide win. Of course, it also helped that Cao had a lot more money than his opponents, but Trump’s endorsement definitely lifted him out of the pack.”
Also from Cardinal News:
Cao’s dismissal of some communities didn’t hurt him:
“He implied that Staunton was “podunk.” He took 57.95% of the vote there. He said Abingdon was too far to drive for a campaign forum. He took 53.67% of the vote there. Just weeks before the election, the Pittsylvania County Republican Committee publicly posted that he still hadn’t visited the county. He took 53.91% of the vote there. Moreover, nobody came close to him. Cao won every locality in the state and was never seriously threatened.”
Cao’s win was impressive. Trump’s endorsement certainly helped his campaign.

Hung Cao is an educated, well trained, experienced, and accomplished retired naval senior officer. I believe he is adroit. However, during his run for congress, he came across as falling short in how to communicate with the electorate. His fault? The RPV’s fault? How is he to magically obtain operations & communications strategy & techniques which the opposition is so clever at providing? WE need to support our candidates.
We voters are not as dumb as many may think. Yes, some are lazy & ignorant, but not dumb. It is now time to fully support those GOP candidates who were successful in the primaries.
Virginia Republicans have got to cure their addiction to running totally new candidates rather than someone who has experience campaigning. Cao had run before but only for one congressional district.
As for Bob Good, he is a well-known incumbent with all the advantages of incumbency. So it is difficult to evaluate a Trump endorsement causing a close call against an incumbent.
