While some might assume that all TJ students would be accepted at UVA, that is not the case. On average 79% of TJ seniors apply for acceptance to UVA. Of those who apply, 68% are accepted and 30% attend UVA. Over the last 6 years UVA has been accepting fewer TJ students. Between 2009 and 2013, UVA accepted 49 fewer TJ students.
I have found no explanation for this trend. I have read that TJ now has remedial math classes, something I can’t imagine the need for at TJ. Why is TJ admitting students who need math remediation when thousands of students compete yearly for the 450 slots at TJ? Isn’t it supposed to be a school for those who excel at math, rather than those who need math remediation?
