Wine Pairings for Halloween Candy

written by Jeanine Martin October 12, 2015

Wondering what wine to pair with all the Halloween candy the kiddos will be bringing home? Well, wonder no more, Travel and Leisure has taken care of it! They have paired many of the popular candies with the appropriate wine.  This one is a favorite of mine:

SweeTARTS + Erben von Beulwitz Kaseler Nies’chen Riesling Spätlese Alte Reben 2011

(Mosel Saar Ruwer, Germany, $28)

“SweeTARTS have semi-sweet and citrus flavors—lemon, grape, cherry, blue punch, and green apple—so they would pair well with this German Riesling. It’s fruity with a high acidity and low alcohol level due to a cool climate region, with a hint of blue slate minerality.”

I have NO idea what ‘blue slate minerality’ is.  Is it different than black slate minerality?  And how we would know?  I’ve never tasted either blue or black slate.

Tootsie Roll + Jean-Louis Chave ‘Silene’ Crozes-Hermitage 2010

(Northern Rhone, Syrah, $31)

“This chewy chocolate caramel candy has a little smokiness to it making it the perfect pair with this complex wine that’s bursting with blueberry, lavender and gamey flavors, and a hint of bacon.”

Who knew wine could have a hint of bacon along with gamey flavors?

Whoopers + Chateau Musar 2007

(Bekaa Valley, Lebanon; $50)

“This is the most current year for the wine as they hold for a while before they release. Nose of smoke, cloves and pepper with rustic flavor mixed with red berry, forest floor, and cocoa nib. Extremely exotic and masculine taste to match with the malted milk balls.”

The taste of the ‘forest floor’.  I assume that means it tastes like dirt.  Yum.  Anyone know what a ‘cocoa nib’ might be?

Peanut M&M’s + Gaja Barbaresco Sito Moresco 2011

(Italy, Langhe; $50)

“This wine has a great balance plus soft texture. The flavor profile includes dried red fruits, refined woodnotes, white pepper, some leather and tar.”

That pairing is sure to please.  Who wouldn’t love a wine with “refined wood notes, leather and tar?” It’s making my mouth water just to think about it. I may just rush out to the driveway and give it a lick, after licking my coffee table and my shoe.
