“Gun Safety” looms yet again in the Old Dominion

written by James Poplar January 28, 2025

As the swallows faithfully return to Capistrano every year so do Democratic legislators return to Richmond with “gun safety” bills tucked carefully underneath of their wings. As many can recall the there was major pushback on these measures during the Northam Administration to include the outright ban of “assault rifles” and other measures which would have little to no impact on crime. Fortunately, due to political pressure and several sensible Democrats crossing the aisle these measures were soundly defeated on the floor.

Over time many of these draconian gun “safety” measures have been watered down and reintroduced only to his credit to be defeated by Governor Youngkin’s veto. So as the fable of the frog who relaxes in the pot of tepid water and does not notice the ever-increasing rise in temperature until it is too late, this year is no exception.

Current legislation under consideration includes HB1607 “Purchase, sale, transfer, etc., of assault firearms and certain ammunition feeding devices prohibited, penalties” commonly known as the “assault weapons ban;” HB 1597 Secure storage of firearms; penalties, and HB1622 Firearm in unattended motor vehicle; civil penalty. A detailed listing of all bills and their respective sponsors can be found at:

Of course, HB1607 “grandfathers”  existing “assault weapons” but as we have seen in other jurisdictions once such legislation passes if provides rationalization for the confiscation of all such weapons and high-capacity magazines.

Now that Donald Trump is our Chief Executive many Republicans will let down their guard and assume all is well but unfortunately in the Old Dominion it is not and a veto by our Governor is not the answer. As Ronald Reagan so succinctly stated “The price of freedom is eternal vigilance. You have known this is a matter of principle on which you don’t compromise.”

Don’t be the frog who was boiled alive thinking he was merely taking a warm bath.

What was it — 2, 3, or so years ago when Texans were literally, actually freezing to death because of severe electrical service shortages during historically low temps statewide? Then it was discovered that the Republicans governors and Republican legislature had refused to allow Texas electric utilities to connect to the national power grid. Such a connection would have enabled Texas utilities to buy electricity from the rest of the US, thereby alleviating the shortage. At the same time, we discovered that Senator Rafael Cruz — born in Canada, never has shown anyone proof of his US citizenship — was vacationing in Cancun where he avoided the cold.

And now we learn that over the past two years, Rafael has introduced legislation to add 28 flights to Washington National, including mandated flights to/from San Antonio.

There is no bottom to Republican MAGAt stupidity. None.

Fox is repoirting that Senator Tammy Duckworth has not paid property taxes in the state for years.

Someone needs to tell Fox that disabled veterans are exempt from property taxes in Illinois.

But, hey, what’s a lie as long as it’s about a Democrat and coming from Fox?

Goddam but you people are stupid.

And in case you don’t know, Duckworth lost both of her legs when the Army Black Hawk helicopter she was piloting was shot down over Iraq in 2004. She’s a warrior, unlike the fake poseur who is now SECDEF.

Truly you are an idiot. Yes, indeed Fox News is reporting that, on a story from the Chicago Sun Times. Here’s the link. It is an OPINION piece written by a so-called “Tax Watchdog” who objects to her getting the relief. It has NOTHING to do with FOX News. Educate yourself before you post trash.

You are right. Fox is not responsible for anything. Nothing.

Typical MAGAt response — “It’s not my fault.”

“. . . “Tax Watchdog” who objects to her getting the relief. ” Objects to her getting the relief? So the loss of both legs in combat does not qualify as a disabled veteran?

The treasonous batsards (deliberate misspelling) never stop. I am ashamed of this beautiful state for this moronic crap. This is my 3rd time living in VA. When I was looking for a place to retire after I lived in TX I would NEVER have chosen this state had I knownthat the likes of Ralph, the baby killer, Northam and Terry McAwfull were so prominent. Now I’m here and I have two senators who betray their oath of office daily. It infuriates me to see the sad state.

” When I was looking for a place to retire after I lived in TX . . . ”

You could pack up, GTF out of Virginia, go back to Texas and you will raise the average IQ of both states.
