As reported here and elsewhere, numerous Virginia politicians, family friends, and community leaders wrote letters to the federal judge who was to decide Bob McDonnell’s sentence for his conviction on public corruption charges, all testifying to McDonnell’s character. We have obtained copies of the letters submitted to Judge James Spencer from the 440 individuals who vouched for McDonnell’s good character, often in highly poignant ways, presented below with redaction of personal addresses of the correspondents. The letters were submitted by McDonnell’s legal team as attachments to their arguments in favor of sentencing leniency.
Authors of these letters range from McDonnell’s neighbors, fellow church members, former colleagues and staffers, personal and family friends, clergy, community leaders, political supporters, and of course many politicians and political professionals—from both parties.
Among the highest profile people submitting letters in support of McDonnell were former Governor Tim Kaine and former Lieutenant Governor Bill Bolling, along with current Speaker of the Virginia House of Delegates, Bill Howell.
Other letter writers include tons of current and former legislators, including names like Obenshain, Black, Carrico, McWaters, Minchew, O’Bannon, Norment, Albo, Lingamfelter, and many others. Among the most moving (and revealing of the man) are those from McDonnell’s children. Among the most heartfelt are expressions of affection from former staffers, and close supporters.
