This trial just gets worse and worse. We are now in full Soap Opera mode. Today’s episode entitled “As the Marriage Fails.” Bob McDonnell says the marriage is “basically on hold”, whatever that means. Are you living together now? “No” Bob responds. A week before trial he has been staying at St. Patricks Church rectory.
The Governor’s testimony today must have been very difficult as he discusses the details of a marriage gone bad with an angry wife who refuses counseling and a husband who is clueless about what she’s doing and how much money she is spending. The Governor knows his wife has spent a weekend in New York with Jonnie Williams on a shopping spree but never asks how much money was spent.
Bob testified that he did not know the price of Jonnie Williams shopping trip until a month after investigation broke in news.
McDonnell reads from a long letter he had written his wife in September 2011. He writes the letter because of her ‘uncontrollable anger’ and ‘because maybe we are done’. He goes on to say that he loves her, she’s his ‘soulmate’ but
“I want to be in love not just watch movies about it.” “I am lonely sometimes” Bob McDonnell writes in his letter.
Meanwhile it is Bob who is away from the family one-third of the year because of political obligations. Maureen must have been lonely too.
