In four weeks and 2 days, reconciliation over healthcare will no longer be possible. If President Donald Trump doesn’t have a “repeal and replace” bill/scam to sign by June 1st, then he’s going to sign the “repeal and replace” plan/scam Chuck Schumer and Nancy Peloisi write.
Are my fellow conservatives so thick as to believe that the House Freedom Caucus (HFC) is excited about about failing to repeal the ACA?
Several of my fellow Bull Elephant conservative/libertarian friends have written articles denouncing the amended ACHA plan because it keeps the infrastructure intrinsic to the ACA.
To the soundtrack of teeth gnashing and cloak tearing, they have told you that it’s full repeal or bust, despite the fact that the HFC and Rand Paul have tried to get such a bill passed out of committee and failed.
They tell you, that it is better to elect a Democrat House and a Democrat Senate and, in three years, a Democrat President, then to pass a Republican Compromise on healthcare before June 1st. Either this is because they like the Democrats or because they like being a powerless minority, or it is because they simply do not understand Congress or, I don’t know, math.
The only reason I support the amended ACHA, is because I have a brain that understands things like reality and history; because I understand that, more often than not, change happens incrementally. Polling shows that support for a full repeal has fallen under 20%. Speaker Paul Ryan and President Donald Trump, and the great and marvelous turtle in the Senate, understand that repealing the ACA is going to take several bills over several years. Conservatives…don’t seem to get it. They’d rather live under Obamacare forever.
I’m sorry… That’s not true. They’d rather collapse the entire US economy and then “win” on the healthcare issue, ensuring that they retain political clout. I’m sorry, I think destroying the economy is stupid.
The HFC and Dave Brat want to move the needle forward. I suspect that Wittman and Garrett will follow suite.
If June 1st comes and we don’t have a Republican compromise on healthcare, then by September, we’re going to have a Democrat compromise on healthcare. If you don’t think that Donald Trump will sign a Democrat revision of the ACA in order to keep the ACA working for another 8 years, then you are naive or constipated or drunk.
In Virginia, Tom Garrett and Rob Wittman just voted against this absurd week-long funding bill that will take us to a Republican Omnibus that will fund 100% of the Democrat agenda and 0% of Donald Trump’s agenda. Congressman Dave Brat will join them in opposing this ridiculous Omnibus Bill next week.
If the amended ACHA fails and this absurd Omnibus Bill succeeds, we’re all going to have to ask ourselves what was the point in electing Republican majorities in the House and the Senate, and electing a Republican President.
I am a libertarian-leaning Republican – just like many of the other writers here at the Bull Elephant. What I am not, is a reckless sycophant to liberty, willing to sellout my future for some impossible “get” today.
If we don’t get a “Republican” compromise by the end of May, we’re going to get a Democrat bill by the end of 2017. Why? Because the ACA is going to collapse. If there isn’t a Republican Bill by the end of May, there is going to be some kind of bill by the end of the year. So either we support the same strategy the Democrats have used for a century… incrementalism … or we support Democrat control of healthcare. My friends here at the Bull Elephant want you to accept Democrat control of healthcare and Congress.
I get being all crazy for liberty. I am. I’m just not willing to give the Democrats what they want just because I want to photobomb my Congressmen with a middle finger while they try to protect me from a Democrat agenda.
My bad.
