A McLaughlin & Associates poll last week reported that the Race for Virginias 10th congressional district is neck & neck. That should be troubling and a bit scary for voters in this district.
As I have written in this column on many occasions, Virginians should consider our cultural and historical values when entering the voting booth. An elected representative, whether a local councilman, mayor or supervisor up through state offices and Congress should represent those values.
The voters first thought should always be “who represents the values of my town or community better?”, not just who is from my party or championed by a friend or relative.
Like I said, the polling gave me pause. How could Jennifer Wexton be equal or higher in polls that Barbara Comstock? It doesn’t make sense based on what I know of the people in our area.
Wexton does not come into this race with a lot of support from the law and order community, in fact, in one of her TV commercials he couldn’t even get real cops to portray police support, one of the uniformed officers in her TV ads was at least one campaign worker.
Virginians are very concerned with the public safety of our towns and countryside. Jennifer Wexton does have a paper trail that indicates that her core beliefs are the opposite of those in her district. In the Virginia Senate, she voted twice against helping victims of domestic violence. She publicly opposes the deportation of criminal illegal alien gang members.
I thought maybe Wexton’s position on taxes might be in line with those in her district and found that she was opposite her potential constituents as well. Jennifer Wexton supports reversing the Trump tax cuts which were championed by her opponent. In February 2018 she said: “I think the first thing to do would be to try to roll back the Tax Cuts… I am loathe to cut spending.”
Her public position is to increase income tax hikes on individuals and businesses. The result would be to raise nearly every tax rate and increase taxes on 90% of Virginia taxpayers. That would come out to $1,200 to $2,400 increase on the typical family of four in Virginia’s 10th District.
Did the polling ask questions on immigration? That is an issue very important to our neighborhoods, and communities. Wexton’s opponent sponsored the Project Safe Neighborhoods Grant Program Authorization Act — signed into law after receiving bipartisan support in the halls Congress. Wexton opposes it, citing the ACLU’s objections.
In 2009, the Northern Virginia Regional Gang Task Force issued a report in which it estimated that there were 3,000 MS-13 gang members in the Northern Virginia region. Capturing violent illegal aliens should be a value that Wexton shares with 10th District voters. She does not.
Results, not resistance is what northern Virginia voters demand. The Representatives that support the president have a real record of achievement in moving America forward. Jennifer Wexton’s political philosophy of “resisting” because she despises the president DOES NOT BENEFIT the residents of the 10th district.
We hear a lot about collusion and complicity in the resistance movement. But they have it backward. Our representatives should be leveraging those words and ideas into positive results that benefit all citizens.
Democrats should insist on complicity in an economy the results in African Americans enjoying the lowest unemployment number in our nation’s history.
Democrats should be complicit in an economy that is back and leading the world. They should be complicit in ensuring a Supreme Court that is true to the constitution rather than politics and special interests.
Jennifer Wexton’s representation of Virginia would be tied up in impeachment hearings, tax increases and flipping our trade balance to an imbalance in favor of our trading competitors. She would prioritize stalling the Trump agenda and sabotaging the US economy and working-class Virginians.
On trade issues, it’s difficult to understand why Democrats like Jennifer Wexton support China, India, and others raping of our economy for decades on the backs of Virginians and all Americans instead of a negotiated policy that will fix it.
Wexton’s recent political victories in the state Senate have been at the expense of her constituents. First, she voted to tax traveling on I-66 in the form of tolls. Then she proposed taking a bite out of taxpayers statewide by having the state buy the Dulles Greenway for upward of $880 million, shifting the burden from users to innocent bystanders.
Yes, I’m very confused by these polls. Are voters so uninformed that they simply don’t know Wexton’s views on the issues? That is possible since Wexton rarely visits with groups that are not part of her “Democratic Socialist” base.
Maybe voters do not know who Wexton’s political contemporaries are? You know the axiom of “birds of a feather flock together?” Wexton took money from Nancy Pelosi’s PAC, and she has the same political positions as mob-rule Democratic Socialists like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Tim Kaine, Barbara Lee, and Maxine Waters.
I think it’s clear that Jennifer Wexton is not flocking with Virginia values or issues. Her flock is one of resistance, character assassination and tax-and-spend. Be informed. It is too important not to.
