At Governor Northam’s press conference today he announced a new phone app that will help with tracking COVID cases. It will provide alerts when the owner of the phone has been in the proximity of someone with the virus.
Virginia is the first state to offer this technology. This webpage explains how the Covidwise app will work. It can now be downloaded on both Apple and Google platforms.
This new app will not trace locations or have access to any other data on a phone. It uses ‘old school’ Bluetooth technology. It will give people notice if they have been in the proximity of someone who has had COVID. After you receive such an alert you may be tested for the virus and quarantine yourself. If you test positive the state will be informed and the app will reflect that. You will have a pin number, your phone will not be traced.
