House Bill 516 would have allowed parents to review sexually explicit required reading material and request an alternative assignment for their children. Governor McAuliffe vetoed the bill saying,
“School boards are best positioned to ensure that our students are exposed to those appropriate literary and artistic works that will expand students’ horizons and enrich their learning experiences,” he said in the veto message.
“This legislation lacks flexibility and would require the label of ‘sexually explicit’ to apply to an artistic work based on a single scene, without further context,”
The Governor also said the state Board of Education is “considering changing state policy to accommodate parents’ concerns”. Right. Don’t hold your breath.
Democrats continue their opposition to parents having any say in how their children are educated. They would prefer the education of children to be left to the government without parental involvement. This is but one more example.
