The Democrats have a long history of telling Republicans what’s wrong with them and what they need to do in order not to lose this demographic or that demographic. In appreciation for their decades-long PR and Policy advice to the Republican Party, I feel that it is incredibly selfish that we Republicans haven’t returned the favor. Republicans control the White House, the Senate, the House, as well as 67 out of 98 partisan state legislative chambers, all while holding 33 governor’s offices.
My Democrat friends are looking for people to blame – racists, sexists, bigots, homophobes, xenophobes, Millennials, men, uneducated people, Christians, and the list goes on. Unfortunately, the problem with the Democrat Party is that they have styled themselves as the party of Big Government. This wouldn’t be so bad if people didn’t view their government as intrusive, annoying, corrupt, complicit with Wall Street and K Street, and operating on a strictly crony-capitalist basis. Hundreds of large books packed full of regulations are published every year. Being the Party of Big Government only works if people actually feel affectionately toward that government. (Check any national poll taken since 1991 for a report card).
Now, the American people are supposed to overlook their intrusiveness because of all the free goodies they get from Uncle Sam. The problem is, that not everyone is getting free goodies and the ones who are paying the most are getting the least. Of course they’re not going to like the government. The game plan was simple, right? If we can get 51% of the American People on the federal dole, then Democrats will never lose another election. Sweet, dear liberals… that’s not how people work.
You’ve created so much divisiveness that black people don’t like all the educational goodies you’re handing out to Hispanic People, especially the ones who aren’t citizens. Hispanic People aren’t voting for black Democrats in meaningful numbers. White poor people are perfectly happy getting welfare from the federal government, but many of them are unhappy with the welfare black and Hispanic people get. Asian People have been totally left out of the victimhood model. This is not to mention that slightly poor people resent the hell out of really poor people who get more free services than they do. A single mom on welfare with one part time job absolutely hates the single mom with 6 children on welfare who makes more in federal aid and child support than the part time job pays.
See, it’s your “selfless” compassion that appeals to people’s greed. Therefore greed is never going away. Greed causes envy. Envy causes resentment. Resentment causes division. Division hurts the Democratic Party too (Feel the Bern?)
A lot poor white folks on Welfare voted for Donald Trump. Donald Trump called illegal immigrants from Mexico rapists and murders and still the Democrats couldn’t get 3/4ths of the Hispanic Vote? What gives?
When Teddy Roosevelt (the original progressive) and Woodrow Wilson (the most liberal progressive ever, and a terrible racist) employed their progressive rhetoric and programs, there was a watchword associated with every program. If you’ve read any of the history, you already know what it is – efficiency. See, here was a big government Republican and a big government Democrat who were looking to expand the role of federal power, but they were driven to actually improve things. They wanted more efficient services. Your party is still offering everyone the sun and moon, but you’re making them wade through miles of red tape to get there. They don’t like that. They aren’t that motivated.
Progressive efficiency went out of vogue during the FDR Administration. It was out of fashion to consider the big picture, so if a program required $2 million and created $900,000 in services, so long as that $900,000 was felt by subsets x, y, and z, the media would write glorious stories about how this New Deal was helping the little guy. Sure, the missing $1.1 million dollars in US capital may starve the national economy’s ability to recover, but it was the 1930s and no one had any time for the meanderings of heartless capitalists who “caused” the Depression in the first place.
If the Democrat Party wants to succeed in the future as a party of big government, then they also need to be the party of good, efficient, effective, efficacious, user-friendly government – where services are delivered with a smile. Now, I don’t think it is possible for Democrats to accomplish this per se, but it would put an end to their reputation as micro-managing meddlers in the lives of average Americans and Main Street. It’s also harder for Republicans to argue against programs that actually improve the economy and accomplish their goals. If business owners were relieved of all the regulations wrapped around their throats, they might even start spending their profits on generating new jobs, better jobs, new products, better products. Who knows? It’s a crazy world out there.
See, for too long you’ve been used to just throwing money at people. When you noticed that the mere presence of money wasn’t working, you decided that you needed to be increasingly involved. Your bureaucrats haven’t been the brightest bulbs in American society and you’ve long struggled to develop quality human capital at the local, state and federal levels. They bungle, they bother, they tire the American people.
Democrats, you have annoyed yourselves out of power. Also, nothing you ever promise comes to fruition. You mean well, but even stupid people see through your good intentions and after awhile begin to worry about their own condition.
Stop trying to be the Party of Big Government and start trying to be the Party of Good Government. Let your results speak for themselves and sell yourselves on the basis of those results. Democrats rule over America’s urban areas. If our cities are constantly dealing with systemic violence and poverty, why in the world would the rest of America want to employ your services? Stop. Don’t get angry. Answer the question!
Compete. I know you think competition has no place in the public sector, but you’ve turned the entire country against the public sector by making it so horribly ineffective, inefficient, and corrupt. (By the way – want to know why the Republicans never get blamed? Because you tell the American People that they are evil and don’t care about people and want to shut down all these programs. So when these programs continue to fail during a Republican Administration, you still get the blame. It’s your baby. If it dies smothered in Red Tape, it’s your fault.)
My last piece of advice may hurt. Back in the 1980s, the silent “moral” majority awoke. They awoke and they didn’t like you. Instead of moving toward them, you started to parse all of your programs as being the really, truly, actually moral choice. While you can redefine most anything in American Society, morality is kind of a hard nut to crack. In the United States, much of our morality still depends on the Torah, Talmud, and the New Testament of the Bible. The Democrat Party just isn’t moral. You wage a war against the Catholic Church, against Judaism, and against Christianity at your peril.
It’s kind of funny when you try to package it that way. I don’t think anyone really believes it, regardless what they say publicly. The recent movement to get the Catholic Church to support Abortion could split the largest Christian Church in the world in half.
I suggest reading the Bible, some Aristotle, some Thomas Aquinas, some Locke. Develop a morality for the 21st century that doesn’t spit in the face of every moral system that came before you – (If your read Hume, Rand, or Nietzsche, which isn’t like the worst idea, don’t quote them, you’ll get excoriated). When you spit on the experience of Man, Man spits back. Maybe this is unfair, but it’s true. Stop trying to become the party of self-righteousness.
There was a time when your utter lack of self-righteousness was one of the only lovable things about you.
