As many will recall, Tom Garrett had to leave politics for a while to deal with some personal demons. He made a comeback last year and was elected to the House of Delegates. He’s one of the good guys, and it’s good to see him back. His visit to and support of Ukraine and its fight against Russian imperialist tyranny is most appreciated.
This led to the crazy 2018 nomination race in the 5th Congressional district to succeed him, and Denver Riggleman, then running as a liberty Republican, won the nomination, and, with ease, the general election. To put it mildly, his term in office did not go as advertised. I won’t rehash the entire saga here, but suffice it to say he sold out to House leadership immediately, and was a member of the House Freedom Caucus in name only.
Enter Bob Good, an official at Liberty University in Lynchburg. Hailing from the social conservative wing of the party, he challenged Riggleman for the nomination in 2020 at the convention and routed him.
That same year, there was a race in the 7th Congressional district, in the wake of Congressman Dave Brat’s defeat to Abigail Spanberger in 2018, for the Republican nomination. Delegate Nick Freitas, in my mind, the Old Dominion’s best elected official, ran for the Republican nomination. He and John McGuire were both first elected to the House of Delegates in 2015. The contrast between the two former special operations men was stark. Freitas was engaging, gregarious, bright, and knowledgable on a host of issues. McGuire, by contrast, didn’t seem to know what his job was, or what his political philosophy was.
Freitas faced off with populist meathead chameleon Corey Stewart for the 2018 U.S. Senate nomination. Stewart had the backing of the Trump cultists, with E.W. Jackson the third candidate in the race. Thanks largely to some comically bad staff work, Nick Freitas lost by less than a percentage point to Stewart, who then, after savaging Freitas with the mos ridiculous insults during the primary contest, meekly conceded the general election to Tim Kaine after promising to fight as hard as possible.
When 2020 rolled around, among a host of others, Freitas, and later McGuire, both got in to the race in the 7th. Veteran establishment GOP hack Chris LaCivita (yes, the guy helping run the Trump campaign this year) helmed McGuire’s effort, and his motley crew of consultants proceeded to sling lies and mud at Nick Freitas the entire run-up the convention in the 7th, and even tried to short circuit the convention itself. It didn’t work. Freitas won the convention and the nomination. Unfortunately, Donald Trump was on the ballot that year, and he weighed down Freitas just enough in the slowly shifting 7th district to give victory to Spanberger.
McGuire, along with a host of other GOP figures, got on board the Glenn Youngkin train in 2021, and abandoned his previous team of consultants for Axiom Strategies, the crew who ran Youngkin’s race. In exchange, these people got promised support in future runs for office and/or appointments in the Youngkin administration. So it proved, when, after winning a seat in the Senate of Virginia in 2023, promising to support Bob Good for re-election in 2024, McGuire changed his mind the week after being elected, since it became obvious Trumpworld was out to get Bob Good for the “unpardonable” sin of supporting Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, rather than their braying orange yankee idol. McGuire magically found fault with the man he had previously heaped praise upon, and filed to challenge him. Comically nonsensical justifications, along with incredibly poor writing, can be found here and here. This is the level Team McGuire is on. As we all know, Good lost a close race to McGuire for the nomination this year. McGuire engaged in some truly ridiculous behavior, which is summarized here.
Bottom line, this guy should NOT be elected. He has no interest in serving his constituents in either the House of Delegates, the Senate of Virginia, or the House of Representatives. He is only about advancing himself, and will make or break whatever promise or alliances he needs to make that happen. Conservatives, and principled Republican of any stripe, quite frankly, should pass on supporting him, and gear up for 2026 to support a genuine conservative candidate in the 5th, regardless of whether McGuire bests the Democratic nominee this coming Tuesday.

Let me add to your stupid column here… how is the Ukraine war going Robbie? 150 billion give or take a couple of billion and the Ukrainians are getting rolled up… probably a million dead… And you Mr Conservative commented about how much that effort was great… Hundreds of billions of dollars wasted there for nothing cause a moron like you thinks that Putin is going to be rolling into Poland next…
Hundreds of billions of dollars Mr Real Conservative that the USA has to print…
I know… I am a Russian supporter… NOT… I just am not stupid like you War first idiots…
Your beloved Bush wasted 3 trillion on the Iraq War that achieved NOTHING… Iraq is now in the orbit of Iran…
And the USA adds a trillion in debt every year to fight all those stupid wars that you beat your chest and support…
Did you go to one of those wars? You didn’t learn anything if you did.
Reagan left the Democratic party for ideological reasons, genius, not for opportunistic reasons like Trump. This is intuitively obvious to anyone not subsumed by the orange cult. As far as Bush goes, I opposed the Iraq invasion, and pretty much every Middle East intervention other than Afghanistan. You know nothing about me if you think I supported Bush’s agenda uncritically, as you do Trump’s. Both you and your buddy here started with the insults, and just like the typical populist Trumpkins that you both are, you can’t handle when I respond in kind. Suxk it up, buttercup. As far as expansion of the federal government, Trump did that as well, both in terms of trying to expand executive power and privilege, and in terms of running deficits, more so than anybody else before him. Seriously, do you even think before you vomit up this nonsense? I supported Jeanine against the then-leadership of BD when they were trying to destroy TBE because they didn’t like competition. As far as immigration goes I opposed not just the Democratic non-enforcement and amnesty legislation over the past 30 years, but the nonsense Bush and McCain tried to push on us, too. Similarly, Trump talked a big game, but really accomplished very little of what he promised, then blamed everyone but himself for his failures. As to Russia, Trump and the rest, I’ll address that in the future.
“he hopes to return to the Republican party when the orange virus has been eradicated.” Wow, I read his column and replied but he apparently deleted my comment. I asked him off Republican control of the House was not as important as enacting revenge on the candidate that he hates. Sounds to me like he is True BLUE RINO. Sad
Why is this here? This is just a Bearing Grifter column… the guys who called Jeanine the Racist in Chief of The Bull Elephant blog due to her opposition to illegal immigration that those bastards love. I would guess Robbie here believes in Bush style amnesties too…
They miss their Bushes, the Trump Derangement Assholes like this one…
You are both bleeding morons. I was a Bull Elephant author before John McGuire or Donald Trump were candidates for anything, and stood up to the squished at Hearibg Drift back when you geniuses likely didn’t follow politics, and Trump was giving money to Democrats, including Hillary Clinton and Kamala Harris. Dummies.
I’m sure you liked Reagan right TDS Asshole? He was a Democrat too. What is the difference between the Bushes and Democrats shit for brains? W expanded the power of the federal government like no tomorrow. Your writing is no different than that McGuire idiot at Bering Drift. How did you stand up to Bearing Drift?
You have a Democrat party that is gone full on totalitarian now… lawfaring people… imposing vaccine mandates until they couldn’t as their vax failed… using the power of the state to take down their opponents… What was the Russia collusion hoax dumbass??? A government operation to take down the opposition candidate…
And let’s talk the border… it will effectively end whatever you think a Republican is soon enough… Those 20 k Haitians in Ohio.. Can swing the election forever.
See you stupid ass… it is imperative now to stand behind Trump not write this kind of shit right now..
Joker, I just got done telling Kenyon that insults are the last refuge of those whose arguments fail. Come on, we have to be better than this. If Trump is elected tomorrow it will behoove all of us to support him 110%. Please stop with the foul language and insults. It makes you look small.
Why are you giving this Trump Derangement Circler Jerker a column here the weekend before the election? Screw this guy and his bullshit.. Let him go write for Bearing Grift…
Go ahead, smooth brain, go ahead and disprove a single thing I said in the article. You will fail.
DeSantis betrayed Trump smooth brain… He listened to the McCain people and instead of waiting his turn at a time when Trump was getting lawfared he ran out and ran for President…. So Goode was looking out for his future and lost… too bad..he wasn’t a bad guy…
Trump has no claim on the ‘loyalty’ of other potential candidates, especially consideline how DISloyal he himself is. If DeSantis were the nominee, this election would be in the bag. Same for Pence and several others.
Trump delivered a red wave last night Robbie… Pence or DeSantis… especially PENCE? Get the F out of here if you think that that guy would have won this election. Even Morning Joe, a TDS Circle Jerker like yourself said that this is the biggest Red Wave since Reagan.. Give up politics boy you know jack crap…
Insults are the refuge of those whose arguments fail. You said yourself that you hope to return to the Republican Party “once the orange virus has been eradicated”. That insults all of us who support Trump. Does that make you feel better? If you vote for Harris that is your choice but keep in mind that she is opposed to everything that good and decent people are looking for in our nation. I trust that if Trump is re-elected tomorrow that you will work to support him and the party.
Do you understand that Trump and his adherents made a bloodsport of insults? So save me through outrage on that score.
I certainly won’t join the Democratic party, but remember parties do not stand for anything in and of themselves. Trump has demonstrated that thoroughly, maybe even more than the neocons did.
Dude, I get that you hate Trump. I disliked him as a person decades before he was cool. But that doesn’t matter at this point – it’s either him or Coup-mala. Choose wisely.
