UPDATE: Representative Kevin McCarthy falls short on the third round of voting for Speaker. One more Republican went against McCarthy to vote for Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), bringing the total number of votes to 20 for Jordan. McCarthy still leads with 202 votes, still short of the 218 he needs. More here. The House has voted to adjourn until noon tomorrow.
UPDATE: Congressman McCarthy has failed again in a second rounding of voting for Speaker of the House. From Foxnews.com:
“With 434 votes cast in the first round, Jeffries received 212, McCarthy received 203, Biggs received 10, and Reps. Jim Jordan, Jim Banks, and Lee Zeldin each received one vote.
In the second round, (Hakeem)Jeffries (D-NY) again received 212 votes and McCarthy again received 203, but Jordan received the support of all 19 defectors. The support for Jordan came despite the fact that the Ohio Republican is backing McCarthy. “
Voting will continue until a Speaker is elected.
We will continue updating the votes.
From The Washington Post:
“Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) failed to secure the necessary Republican votes to become House speaker, marking the first time a majority party’s nominee has faltered on an initial ballot in a century. The vote was a blow to McCarthy, who spent weeks making concessions to the hard right in the Republican ranks in hopes of securing votes. McCarthy’s next move was unclear, but he has vowed to pursue additional votes in hopes of winning over defectors and achieving a majority. The House remained in limbo, as no other business or swearing in of members could occur without the election of a speaker.”
McCarthy lost by 19 Republican votes, far short of the 218 votes needed.
This is only the second time since the Civil War that the House of Representatives has needed more than one round of voting to elect the Speaker.
The House is proceeding with more nominations for Speaker, prior to another vote.
Live second round voting here. McCarthy is expected to fail a second time in his bid for Speaker. Voting will continue until a Speaker is elected.
