After that disaster at the Broward County School where the brass kept local law enforcement from charging into the school to stop an active shooter, school boards have been struggling with the best ways to keep our kids safe from a lunatic intent on doing harm. For years now, conservative activists such as Sean Hannity and Larry O’Connor have been advocating the need to arm our teachers. However too many School Boards have been less than interested in trying something new.
However Lee County Va has voted to implement a plan which will arm certain select school employees to be able to defend themselves and the students in Lee County in case of an active shooter or terrorist attack or other threat to the lives of our kids.
Said Lee School Board Chairman Michael Kidwell – “The only way to fight a gun if somebody comes through these doors with a gun to shoot our students is with another gun. Board Member Rob Hines echoed Chairman Kidwell’s thoughts. “At least it gives us a chance. If we sat there and did nothing I couldn’t sleep at night. At least we’re trying to do something”.
Arming our teachers is the legally, fiscally, and strategically prudent thing to do. Lee County can not afford to hire more law enforcement officials to adequately protect each school. Lee County is going to strictly screen applicants for this job, and make sure they are adequately trained so that in case of an emergency, no innocent lives are lost. And while we all appreciate what our law enforcement does to keep us safe, when seconds are required, the police are often minutes away. Many teachers have already volunteered for the role. Said Ronald Earley, former Lee County School Principal “Sooner or later it could happen. And like some of the Board members said tonight, we need to be prepared if it does”.
Lee County is leading the way in keeping our kids safe. Well done Lee County School Board.
