We Must Resume Our Lives
Today, Tuesday May 12, 2020, Governor Northam decreed that selected Northern Virginia localities are exempted from his decision that some businesses may begin to operate again in the Commonwealth of Virginia. While I question Northam’s legal authority to even make such sweeping pronouncements that is a matter for another day.
What I don’t question is that we are confronted with a virus which simply will not go away. Unfortunately, all the social distancing in the world won’t solve this problem. Virtually every epidemiologist has stated that even if the summer months in the Northern Hemisphere bring a temporary respite from this insidious disease the coronavirus will return with a vengeance this fall.
We are accumulating a ruinous and unsustainable debt with regard to various Federal relief programs. We can’t continue borrowing money forever because one day, and that day may be sooner than we suspect, we will have to pay the piper.
Poverty, depression and despair will be equally as harmful as COVID-19 is.
We Virginians can’t remain hiding in their basements forever. The fact is COVID-19 is here to stay and the forlorn hope of a miracle vaccine is a distant and uncertain prospect if in fact such a vaccine can even be invented. We must steel ourselves to the unfortunate reality that it is necessary for us to resume our lives in the face of this unspeakable disease and do our best.
