The largest single political donation in Virginia’s history, $5 million, has come from the Republican Governor’s Association with the hopes of taking back the Governor’s mansion in November. The only other Governor’s race this year is in New Jersey. VPAP reports the top Virginia political donations this year here.
The RGA is betting big on Virginia through a PAC, A Stronger Virginia. According to RGA spokesman, Jon Thompson, because the money is in a PAC they may spend all of it or none of it. If it looks like the money is better spent elsewhere they will pull the money from Virginia but right now the $5 million is for our Governor’s race.
“We see the Virginia governor’s race as a race that’s very vulnerable for party flip,” Thompson said. “We see it as a race that’s winnable. So we’ve started taking steps to do what we can.”
Thompson also said they are staying out of the Republican primary. But it seems to me they are betting on Virginia and Ed Gillespie because he is in the lead for the nomination and he is well known among Republican Governors as the former head of the Republican Party.
