In late September of 2018 Loudoun County Board of Supervisors Chairman Phyllis Randall attempted to add support for the Equal Rights Amendment, formally proposed as an amendment to the U.S. Constitution in 1972, as part of the Board’s legislative agenda for the upcoming 2019 General Assembly session. The board voted against adding support for the ERA by a count of 5-1 with 2 members absent. This victory was accomplished without Ron Meyer’s support however. He abstained.
Not only did Meyer abstain from voting against what the left has long considered the key to enshrining abortion forever as a Constitutional right, he did something even worse. Ron Meyer declared his vocal support for this disastrous amendment:
“If I was in the General Assembly I think I’d support this amendment, so I have no problem with it,” Supervisor Ron Meyer (R-Broad Run) said. “So if I was state senator, or in the House of Delegates, I would have no problem supporting it.”
Ron Meyer is currently running for State Senate against Geary Higgins who voted to block support for the ERA.
Democrats have been pushing hard to get the last few states they need to ratify the ERA. They believe they can override the time limit placed on ratification in the 1970’s, and they may not be wrong. There is no settled case law for this. In fact, they only case known to actually reach the Supreme Court on this issue was one where Idaho was trying to defend its rights to rescind its ratification of the ERA and that was sent back to the lower courts as moot when an extended deadline for ratification had passed.
The ERA has been opposed by Conservative groups for years. It would have disastrous consequences, not just for the abortion argument, but for women as well. Maternity leave could be deemed unconstitutional unless also extended to men. Women could be forced into the draft. The Women, Infants and Children (WIC) federal benefits program that provide support to single and low-income mothers would be done away with because it discriminates against men.
Virginia has been a target of the left for ratification of the ERA for years, and now Ron Meyer, who has voiced support for this horrible law, wants you to elect him to the Virginia Senate.
Stand up for woman, and for real equality and say “no” to Ron Meyer on Tuesday, June 11th.
