Governor McAuliffe has declared Charlottesville to be in a state of emergency with the National Guard on standby after white nationalist protesters and those opposing them have erupted in violence. Before the protest even began a gray dodge charger plowed into the crowd as they marched down Charlottesville mall toward the Emancipation Park. The car plowed into two other vehicles and injured at least 4 people. The vehicle then escaped, driving backward at high speed. The driver was later apprehended.
The Washington Post is reporting 10 injured with one fatality.
The “Unite the Right” protest was due to begin at noon in front of the Robert E. Lee statue that the city has threatened to remove from Emancipation Park. The violence began before noon with pushing and shoving between the two groups and then car plowing into the crowd. Law enforcement has shut down the protest and cleared the park.
The protest began on Friday night when white supremacists marched across the campus of the University of Virginia to the newly refurbished Rotunda with torches shouting “White lives matter” and “You will not replace us”.
