On the way to work today I was shocked to hear insults on the radio from an organization claiming to support Republican unity and encouraging listeners to thank Barbara Comstock for her vote.
The Ad
“Mainstreet Advocacy” purchased ad time to support six Republican members of Congress who voted with the Democrats in favor of full DHS funding thereby ignoring realistic concerns that Obama’s executive amnesty would be allowed to stand. The ad includes the following:
75 Republicans stood against the Congressional bullies who want to lie about amnesty
Call Congresswoman Barbara Comstock, and thank her for putting our safety above petty politics.
“Bullies” and “Lies.” That’s what conservatives are reduced to.
The ad ends by stating it is paid for by Main Street Advocacy.
The Organization
Who or what is Main Street Advocacy? Main Street Advocacy is one of a handful of organizations run by Sarah Chamberlain and Steven LaTourette that supposedly work for the benefit of main stream Republican values.
The major organizations are:
REPUBLICAN MAINSTREET PARTNERSHIP PAC, a traditional PAC that gives most of its money directly to Congressional campaigns, and follows traditional PAC fundraising rules with donation limits of $5,000 per person.
And
DEFENDING MAIN STREET SUPERPAC INC, a traditional superpac operating largely outside of campaign funding and spending rules as long as it does not directly coordinate with a candidate.
Main Street Advocacy appears to simply be a spending vehicle for the superpac.
Main Street Advocacy claims to support the following:
unity instead of division, pragmatism instead of social dogma. It’s what conservatives have traditionally stood for – and we take pride in that heritage.
Having like-minded conservatives called bullies and liars is not uniting, its not pragmatic, and it is not what conservatives have traditionally stood for.
Follow the Money
Then we get to play the money game because for the “Main Street” groups the sources of fundraising are almost comical.
The superpac appears to be the vehicle for which the ads were ultimately purchased. As reported by Michele Malkin the “Main Street” groups have substantial left wing funding. She identified approximately $400,000 as coming from labor unions per a National Journal Article. But let us delve deeper.
According to the FEC, the superpac has received the following during the 2014 election cycle:
- $500,000 from International Union of Operating Engineers (Union)
- $500,000 from Working for Working Americans (Union)
- $275,000 from Laborers’ International Union of North America (Union)
- $175,000 from Laborers Political League Education Fund (Union)
- $150,000 from National Air Traffic Controllers Association (Union)
- $100,000 from Air Line Pilots Association (Union)
- $50,000 from LIUNA Building America (Union)
- $50,000 from Marine Engineers Beneficial Association (Union)
- $10,000 from Electrical Contractors PAC (Union)
- $10,000 from Teamsters (Union)
- $5,000 from Southwest Airlines Pilots Association (Union)
Total of Union money $1,825,000
Non-union money of note:
$57,225 Congressional Leadership Fund (House Republican Congressional Leadership)
Total fundraising by the superpac during the 2014 election cycle:
$2,001,499
This means over 91% of the superpac funding came from labor unions.
Citizens in northern Virginia are being told by unions to call Barbara Comstock and thank her for standing up against the lying bullying congressional conservatives. Perhaps now that you know the truth you can point out to your Congresswoman that you don’t appreciate shadowy left wing organizations masquerading as republicans implying that you are a bully and a liar for standing up for conservative principles.

Will somebody please tell me why the Unions would want amnesty? What is in it for them?
It would seem that you are saying that Unions are using their members money to help put their members out of work????
What am I missing?
Union leadership wants more dues paying members and a bigger, more politically powerful labor movement over the next generation. Less important is the immediate effect on their current members.
Bad news, but makes sense. They are here to stay, may as well sign em’ up!
And what is your take on HR 25?
Someday you will figure out that the whole party is phony.
Very good analysis of the nature of this group. In addition to Main Street Advocacy prior to the DHS vote the American Action Network was airing negative ads in prime time slots in three states, Kansas, Oklahoma and Ohio — urging Reps. Tim Huelskamp (R-Kan.), Jim Bridenstine (R-Okla.) and Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) to back funding for the anti-terrorism agency. American Action Network (AAN) officials also run the Congressional Leadership Fund Super PAC, an “independent” expenditure PAC focused on electing a House Republican majority.
As far back as 2011 the roots of this organization tie it to Eric Cantor, John Boehner and Pete Sessions who have made joint appearances before it. In 2011 Brian Walsh, a former political director at the National Republican Congressional Committee, was hired as the group’s president, replacing Rob Collins, the former chief of staff to Eric Cantor The AAN board is currently home to anti-conservative power players including Boehner’s ex-chief of staff Barry Jackson and Reince Priebus’ previous RNC chief of staff Mike Shields. As for Main Street Advocacy it was former Congressman Steven LaTourette [R-OH14, 2003-2012] who stated on MSNBC’s The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell recently that former colleague and close friend Speaker John Boehner “needs to take no prisoners” in the DHS fight. In this case take no prisoners not from the Democratic opposition but from the conservatives in his own caucus!
I don’t believe the picture could be any clearer. This leadership doesn’t view Republican conservatives as colleagues, friends or even useful assets, they are the “enemy” and the number one target of open opposition NOT the progressive wing of this lawless Democratic administration. This is who Barbara Comstock and countless other Virginia elected Republican officals have made their pact with and that pact includes every effort possible to drive the conservative wing from the party. This is only part of the behavior underway to effect that act. What they don’t have is the grassroots support of thier own political organization so its time during future primary seasons for us to “take no prisoners” believe me they aren’t planning too. DON’T continue to be fooled get smart about WHAT future candidates really stand for.
Candidate Brian Schoeneman is a member/supporter of the Main Street Partnership group. He was very vocal (online) in his support of the group and its goal of pushing liberal Republican ideas/candidates.
Thanks for bringing this to light, Paul.
Likewise, the American Action Network, another supposedly Republican organization which ran ads against Republicans who voted against Boehner’s cave on the DHS, includes in its network Ed Gillespie, Jeb Bush, and Haley Barbour.
I wish some of our smart, real conservatives would study on how to level the Republican playing field. It seems the grassroots conservatives outnumber the Establishment, but the Establishment has more money as a counterbalance, What about a contract between any nominee and the RPV stating the party gets 2% of all donations?
Where did you find this statistic on grassroots conservatives outnumbering establishment conservatives.
Or not statistic, but what are you using to draw your inference?
