Winchester, VA – Today, Winsome Sears announced her intention to seek the Republican Party of Virginia’s nomination to become the Commonwealth of Virginia’s 42nd Lieutenant Governor. A small business owner, United States Marine, former Delegate, and the first Republican to win a majority Black District since 1865, Sears comes into the race following her success as the National Chair of Black Americans to Re-Elect the President – an organization focused on expanding the Republican Party by engaging new voters. Sears released the following statement: “Over 50 years ago, when I immigrated to America, I came as a young child with a vision of opportunity. Consequently, my American Dream became a reality for me and this country has enabled me to do great things for my family, community, and county. From serving in the United States Marine Corps to the Virginia House of Delegates to building my own small business, I have been truly blessed by Virginia. “Unfortunately, opportunity and freedom are not the same as they were 50 years ago. For too long, our Commonwealth has suffered under the abuses of Democrat leadership. Governor Northam and Lt. Governor Fairfax have eroded our most precious rights at every possible turn by championing infanticide and assaulting our Second Amendment rights. Like so many other small business owners, I’ve endured the unwarranted and unnecessarily aggressive shutdowns that have been sanctioned by this hypocritical administration. This assault on hardworking Virginians and our economy must end. “My service as a Marine – combined with my personal faith – taught me to never back down from a challenge, and I believe that it is my responsibility to stand up and help lead the effort to ensure that our shared, conservative values are represented in Richmond. It is of paramount importance that we nominate a candidate who will unite the Republican Party, expand the electorate as I have been doing, and secure a resounding victory in November.” You can watch Sears’ announcement video by clicking here. ### About Winsome Sears Winsome was born in Jamaica and is a mother, wife, and a proud United States Marine. She was also a hard-charging Vice President of the Virginia State Board of Education and she served her community as a men’s prison ministry leader and women’s homeless shelter director. Winsome received presidential appointments to the U.S. Census Bureau where she co-chaired the African American Committee and the Advisory Committee on Women Veterans to the Secretary of Veteran Affairs. Winsome was elected to a majority Black legislative district as a Republican – a feat that no other Republican in Virginia has been able to accomplish since 1865. Consequently, Winsome also became the first (and still only) Black Republican woman, the first female veteran, and the first immigrant elected to the Virginia House of Delegates.
