For months there has been speculation that the Redskins would tear down the old RFK stadium where the Skins played from 1961 until 1996 and build a new stadium on the site. Some DC leaders said they would object unless the team changed the name of the team. Now the department of Interior has weighed in because the National Park Service (NPS) owns the property and they fall under Interior which falls under the President. From thehill.com,
But Interior Secretary Sally Jewell, whose department includes the NPS, told D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser in April that, unless the Redskins change their name, the Obama administration would not work to accommodate construction of a new venue, according to The Washington Post……
“As I believe the Secretary made clear in our discussion, the NPS will not take a position in support of such an extension at this time,” Robert A. Vogel, a regional NPS director, wrote in the letter obtained by the Post.
Obama has said he would change the team name if he could. We have to hope he doesn’t decide he has some sort of executive privilege to do just that.
