Sully District. The departing six-term incumbent, Republican Michael R. Frey, has been a constructive consensus-builder. The Republican vying to succeed him, John P. Guevara, a technology consultant, is cut from different cloth: He has ranted against advocates who would put illegal immigrants on a path to citizenship — though his parents, originally illegal immigrants, eventually became citizens — and suggested that the federal government regards conservatives as terrorists.
This is so wrong and so unfair. John Guevara’s parents came to this country legally, with a VISA. Before their VISA expired they fell under Reagan’s amnesty plan, Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986. Guevara explained all of this in an article in the Fairfax Free Citizen. John Guevara’s parents were NEVER in this country illegally. Shame on the Washington Post for this outrageous lie.
John Guevara has asked the Washington Post to retract their lie and apologize.
CHANTILLY, VA – Today the John Guevara for Supervisor campaign demanded a retraction and apology from Lee Hockstader and the Washington Post for a vicious attack on John’s parents calling them “illegal immigrants” when they came to the United States legally. The attack on John and his parents also attribute positions to Guevara on immigration that are flat out lies.
“I am a first time candidate so this came as a shock to me that a newspaper would just flat out lie about your positions and attack your parents. But I am learning quickly that the disdain for the Washington Post in many circles is well deserved,” said Guevara. “That is why I have sent a letter to the Washington Post demanding an immediate retraction and apology to me, my family, our campaign and supporters.”
In an article produced by the Editorial Board and fueled by questionable journalist Lee Hockstader’s shoddy research, the Washington Post’s vicious attack asserts that because John’s parent’s immigrated from Mexico, that they did so illegally. They were in fact legal immigrants.
Because Guevara is doing so well in this campaign, the Washington Post is attacking him with lies to help their chosen Democrat candidate, Kathy Smith. We’ve seen the Post do similar things in the past in their efforts to help elect Democrats.
“What we’re seeing is a hit piece to aid our opponent’s campaign,” said Campaign Manager Sean McCort. “This atrocious attack is no doubt a reaction to John’s status as the front runner in this race. Having won the key competitive endorsements in this race from the Fairfax Chamber of Commerce’s NOVABizPAC, The Virginia Police Benevolent Association, and The League of Conservation Voters; Latinos con McAuliffe Steering Committee Member Carlos Castro, Supervisor Michael Frey, Delegates Tim Hugo and Jim LeMunyon (all of whom represent Sully District) show John is clearly a candidate cut from a different cloth and the clear favorite of voters in Sully District.”
The yellow journalism also misrepresented Guevara’s position on immigration in an attempt to embroil Sully District’s front runner in the hotly contested 2016 Presidential election. Guevara’s actual position on immigration calls for enforcing our laws and compassionately managing the consequences for individuals who enter the United States illegally. On Saturday, The Washington Post published a vicious and false attack on Sully Supervisor candidate John Guevara’s parents, and made a false statement regarding John’s views on immigration. The Guevara campaign has rightly demanded a retraction.
Sully voters must act: Vote for John Guevara — and tell your neighbors to get out and vote as well. The only way to stop the politics of personal destruction is to beat the other side.
All Fairfax voters must act: The media makes these scurrilous attacks because in their hearts they want to live in a one-party state. Let’s show them that the two-party system is alive in Fairfax County.
John Guevara is one of the finest candidates the Republican party has ever had. We are so fortunate having him represent us in Sully district. We need to give him our full support and all the time we have to help him win this important election. John will make us proud on the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors. Please help elect this fine man to office.
